Chickens make for the most wonderful funny stories. Better than TV.

Hi and welcome

I had a trio of exchequer leghorns and one day out of the blue I heard two lots of crowing from the pen and sure enough one of the hens was singing a duet with him. Not anything like the egg song but a proper cock-a-doodle-doo crow. She did it for a few months and was still laying throughout that time. I would not have believed it if I hadn't seen and heard it for myself. In fact, the first time I heard it, I was in the house and went rushing out because I thought a stray cockerel must have turned up. She was probably about 2 years old at the time. Unfortunately Horace got attacked by someone's dog and killed and Margo never crowed again. I integrated the two remaining girls into my main flock after that but she never felt inclined to duet with the boys up there.

Some chickens, just like some people, don't fit the stereotypical norms.

It will be interesting to see some photos of your birds and see if you have one such individual or if your tenant made a sexing error....which is probably more likely. Hopefully you will be able to post some photos soon and we can take a look.

Regards

Barbara

This hen lays eggs and she cockadoodledoos in the morning. Her voice is funny sounding but she definitely thinks she is a rooster

The chance of three "hens" out of six being rooster wannabes is slim and funny!

You are absolutely right though. I didn't read it properly and although I saw 3 with big combs and wattles, for some reason I only thought one was crowing. Large comb and wattles mean nothing unless they are under 4 months which clearly they aren't, but 3 of them crowing is definitely less likely than winning the lottery jackpot!
