Hen is badly egg bound or something similar please help

It's done and buried now, I used the broomstick method because I was scared of missing with the hatchet, appeared to be painless and instant thankfully but wow was it a sad experience :( really hope I don't have to do it again any time soon, thanks for the advice and help everyone, rip snowy x

I'm sorry you lost her :hugs
It really never gets any easier putting them down but you stepped up and did what was necessary.

The bit that was the hardest was after doing it and the head off came her eyes where still open it was like she was looking at me just before her eyes closed :( I don't think I'll get that image out of my head that's why I'm glad I have pics of them to remember them by when they were are their happiest

As she was dying I held her to try and comfort her on her way out, is that ok or is it better to let the body run around and flap to expel energy or something to finish the process properly? Just wondering incase I ever need to do it again

:hugs You did fine. Sometimes the head will come off, I've done that. It's better to know you completed the job instead of having to re-do it.
If you ever have to this again, you could lay a small towel over the head so you don't see the eyes, that might make it a little easier.
I do try to control the flapping, it's fine what you did. I'm sure you comforted her at the end. Your girl was suffering and you did the right thing.
It can be hard, but this is part of chicken keeping. All of us at some point have or will have to face this. You did good sweetie, you overcame your emotions and took responsibility:hugs

I was scared of not doing it hard enough and only half killing her or something that's why I did it too hard and ended up with the head off, I had read of people knocking them out first that would have been better but again was concerned I'd have caused pain and not done it right, but its a relief knowing that holding her was ok in during the last moments, thanks for all the support it really helped alot and I know what to do now in the future

So sorry for your loss, and Wyorp Rock really said it all very well. If you are curious about other methods, there are videos online. Of course, they are not all equal, but you can get an idea of what method may be easier. I have tried a few methods, and none is super easy, and I have had to try a couple if times before being successful. It is just that we have to be willing to do this for the animals in our care, so we don’t let them suffer. Take care.
