Hen just started to lay -- feel funny eating the eggs.

WOW, Thank you all for replying so quickly! I almost didn't submit that post because I felt silly, and now I'm so glad I did. Whew. So glad I'm not alone here.

I think part of the problem is the runny yolk. I like them over easy. That's where things break down for me when eating them. I'll try cooking the yolks for a while.

I just cooked up two more fresh eggs along with one store-bought egg so i could compare and appreciate. The store egg tasted like rubber compared to the fresh. Seriously. Bland and strange.

When I first started growing my own vegetables, I actually did have the same feeling for a while. I wondered if my food was "ok" to eat or was there mold or a parasite on there somewhere? I'm over that. I eat my own food and love it, although I'm not the best gardener. I appreciate those two little okra pods I get each day. LOL.

I'll get over it. I like knowing where my food comes from, but I'm not sure how I got so preoccupied with where it comes from!

I was thinking kinda the same thing wildflower said...can't think how many times i've let some veg go too long in the garden cause i'm in love with them, and just keep staring at them like i do my (now grown) kids and grandgirl...just amazed that i've produced something so precious.....

I remember being a little hesitant with the first eggs...these days i go out and get 'em while they're still wet for my over-easies and toast...num-y-nums!

Although I still feel a little strange eating the eggs from my chickens, I feel good that I'm knowledgable about the origin of my food. So many people act like eggs come in a box in the refrigerated section of the supermarket - and chicken comes in little styrofoam packages at the meat counter. I keep telling myself that the eggs from my chickens are the freshest and most nutritious possible. However, for someone who didn't grow up on a farm, there is a definite process to becoming comfortable with it - and I'm not completely there yet.

I feel you! When our first eggs came we had some difficulty as well. Actually, I shouldn't speak for my husband, but I know that I definitely did. I ate it, but it was very awkward.

But got past it and now I

my girls eggs!

I hope you'll soon be able to enjoy them, they are really fantastic!

Hmmm, never really thought about it. We've got our first flock now and they won't be laying for quite a while yet. So far as I know, we'll be eating them. I don't think I will have a problem with it...I'd feel worse if they went to waste (especially since we don't have a roo, so they're food eggs or nothing).

That is how I am too. I feed my entire family our eggs and say how great and healthy it is etc. I wont touch them. Dont know why either. I buy store bought white ones.

I'm not that way about eating chicken though.

I know exactly what you mean! With our first eggs we collected 5 and then made an omelette. I was totally trying to control myself from creeping out about it. I didn't tell me husband... but I did not want to take a bite. My husband took the first bite and exclaimed how good it was. I thought "come on Christie this is ridiculous! you have to be able to eat your own eggs!". So I just forced myself and took a bite. It was good! Now I don't worry about it. But it does cross my mind when I eat hard boiled eggs. But I push those thoughts away and keep eating. lol

I got my first egg yesterday and I've been thinking the same thing. I am going to blow out the contents and keep the shell. The cooked egg will go back to the girls....LOL! This will be the only egg I will do this with since 1) it's the very first one and 2) I know exactly who it came from.

i was so excited when my hens started laying.it was 10 days before i could eat a egg.and i still felt weird about it.
