Hello everyone! I have a hen who is one year old and as of yesterday she has been acting a bit funny. She’s usually top dog and lets everyone know it.

*A little back story*
She has not laid since September. She began laying in late August. One day she laid a soft egg and has not laid since. She has been perfectly fine and has not had any issues until now.

Yesterday we noticed her isolating herself from everyone with her feathers slightly puffed and she would sit and sleep. She has been moving overall slower, and just seems kind of out of it. Her crop had food in it yesterday and her comb appeared red and healthy.

Today she is acting about the same, however we noticed a few times where her tail was down and standing with her feathers puffed a little bit. Comb is still red and standing up. We checked her and she has little food in her crop late in the afternoon. Her poop is very green. Never seen poop this green. She is now inside.

Anyone have any ideas?

Sorry about your hen. It sounds like she has a reproductive disorder that first caused the soft shell egg, then stopped laying, and now has caused her tail to be held low, and have a poor appetite that has caused the dark green droppings. Internal laying, salpingitis, oviduct cancer, and egg yolk peritonitis are common reproductive disorders. A vet might good to help with a diagnosis and to prescribe antibiotics to help treat any infection, but they do not always help in these cases. Enrofloxacin, which is banned for chickens, is sometimes used and sometime available online. It can treat E.coli, mycoplasma, and other bacteria that may cause reproductive infections. I would try to make her comfortable, and get her eating some watery chicken feed, scrambled egg, or try tapunabor canned cat food.

Thank you so much. We were wondering if it was related to her reproductive system, but since she’s gone so long without issue we figured it’s gastrointestinal related. We are keeping her comfortable and isolated. Hopefully things will turn out and nothing spread to the rest of our ladies :fl
