Hi guys,

I've got one hybrid Rhode Island Red and two silkies. My RIR is less than a year old and has been laying one egg per day since I got her about 2 1/2 months ago. She has settled in very well and has a very large area to roam and is fed on a massively varied diet. She get in very well with the silkies, one of which we found out recently is a male.

Over the last two weeks she seems to have stopped laying eggs and has lost weight and doesn't seem to have as much an appetite, despite wanting food. Does anyone know what may be wrong with her? She seems well in her self apart from this.

FYI - We were told she was wormed and fully vaccinated when we bought her. I havnt given her anything as of yet.

Thanks In Advance,
Jason

HI Jason, I have a hen - a NJ red... and noticed she's the same way now... not sure what's going on... but it's concerning... what happened to your little hen?

Hi Jason,
It's difficult to know what is going on without some more details.
Is your chicken molting?
You said she gets a varied diet, can you say exactly what she would get on a daily basis please? What is her poop like?
Does she have free access to grit
Do you offer oyster shell
Have you checked her crop is empty in the morning before eating and drinking
As she has stopped laying hopefully she is just molting which can make them feel lousy. Check the above, and look for any feather loss, and any sign of pin feathers growing in - often noticeable around the neck area and under wings.
Let us know the above and we'll go from there.

Hi FiddleChics,
see reply to Jason, same applies but a new thread might be best!

Thanks @Cragg Klefor! I realized later that night after I posted, I went out to the coop, and upon close inspection of the girls - that the other hens must have been really fluffing themselves up - since it was so cold - to get warm. I didn't figure on this and was really concerned. I keep a close eye on them (and this is my first winter with chickens) and I worry sometimes about them - and BYC is really my only resource - I don't know anyone with chickens here near home... But thank you for the reply :) I did wonder what happened with @jforrest08 and his little hen though... I hope she's ok...
