So I helped out a friend who had waaaaaaay too many chicks hatch at once. I choose four, and I'm so hoping they're all hens. Probably a wynondotte barnyard mix I'm guessing. My original flock is just over 4 months and should all be hens. No one is laying, no one is crowing either. So, I just need help with the newbies please? There are four. I'll start with one for now? They are about two months old.

Definetly Cockerel, my 3 and a half month olds have WAY smaller combs and waddles than that. Another way is to see if he has really red combs and waddles.

Does anyone know how well crow collars work? I know I won't be able to send him to freezer camp, and I'd hate to send him back to my friend. She already has too many Roos.

I've read mostly negative reviews about the crow collars. They choke the bird when it tries to crow. Have you thought about just giving him away? I've used Craigslist a few times to give away extra cockerels I didn't have the heart to eat. Just make sure you meet in a very public place (not at home) for the exchange and that the people getting the roo have a proper container for the ride to his new home.
