Hen or Rooster?

Wait - what?? That's a HEN??? How did you determine that? Because I have 4 of these birds and 3 look like that bird and CROW while the one lone one does not. The other lone one (that doesn't crow) looks like the hen on the left in the pic above with two birds in it.

Don't let big red combs and long tails fool you. :)

I know it's a hen b/c it doesn't look like this:

Sorry I missed your reply! Thank you for the information. We were a bit confused when we noticed the difference between them and we were worried we had a bunch of roosters.

This is where it's best to start your own thread, cause folks get confused as to who is responding to who!
Age is the key for sexing birds. I think your birds are roosters, but knowing how old they are would help. Those other hens are probably close to 5 months old, and a fast maturing breed that have large combs. Plus, a young bird crowing is a rooster. I know folks go on about crowing hens, but really when that happens it's an older, mature hen who gets a hormonal issue. Young pullets don't crow.

craftyridge, your birds are nice leghorn pullets. They get huge ol floppy combs and lay white eggs like crazy.

Donrae thank you for the information. We were a bit confused because there is one that has a smaller lighter comb. Guess she just hasn't developed as quick :)

Good news today! Woke up to 2 eggs so evidently everyone is right and they are all hens....Thank God
