Hen with eye infection, bubbling in eye, can't open it, help?

If it's really just eye infections, which I'm not sure of, then you need to get down at their level, stir the shavings and take a whiff. Also, feel the top of them with your hand. You may have a serious ammonia issue if eyes are the only symptom.

I recently did my deep fall cleaning. In the spring and fall I get into every crack and crevice and really do a good cleaning. I may have kicked up a lot of dust. Out of 50 chickens this one hen is the only one having this issue. She dose not have any other symptoms and appears to be very healthy. Her eye has closed shut twice now.
It has been nice to be able to follow along on chicken_china_mom's thread to get help on my own hen.

The pine shavings that I buy drive me nuts because they seem to be more sawdust than actual shavings. I clean the coop out completely about once every 2 weeks, and every time I clean it out, I put down DE. When you say dust, do you mean dust from the shavings, or dust from the chickens? What else should I do inside the coop? How do I reduce the dust, other than sweeping it out? Eye infections does seem to be the only problem.

Generally what I do when I clean out the coop is I put scratch or other treats out in the yard, and the chickens all run out there to eat, and that gives me the opportunity to clean the coop out. I usually have one kid occupy the birds while the other works with me inside the coop to remove all the litter, dust the coop, and put down new litter. The only time birds are in the coop when I'm cleaning it is if I have broodies, and I haven't had any broodies in awhile.

Oh, and I did not notice any odor to the eye infection. It looks a little better today. She's been resting most of the day.

Sounds you keep the coops very clean adn dust free from teh birds, if they have no smell, check and if she has tiny tiny bubbles in teh corner of her eye, if so it could be eye worms and vet rx will help that, if no bubbles and no other signs of anything then you may have a dominant one in there plucking at them.

i have got this eye infection in 4 chicks now ,i thought i was winning but found one of Yokohama chicks with it today
The three i have been treating over the last 3 weeks have all got it at different times but none of them are outside as they are all under 2 months
I have had them on some antibiotics for Pigeons ,which is all i could get at the time.
All of them have started out the same with the puffy eyes all weeping and after washing with warm salt solution the and antibiotics it has slowly dried up
BUT my Dutch chick has had the skin over one eye grow back and now she only has one eye ,lovely and clean skin ,i feel bad for her but she is eating an running around ok
I have all these sick ones together,The first 3 are all drying out and i keep bathing the dry crust to clean it off

But as i say today one of my baby Yokohama was just sitting on his own ,at first i thought he had got cold as we had our first frost last night
but as i bathed his eyes one was just sore but the other was swollen and i pushed it gently and a load of white puss came out
i felt quite sick and he looked really bad
But i put him in the incubator to warm him up and drip fed some antibiotic treated water down his throat ,now its late afternoon he is feeding and looking better ,just washed his eye again
I dont know what to do next ,i have no shavings down they are on concrete floors
All my adults are looking good as they are outside in pens ,it seems just to get to my young ones ,
i clean out all the droppings every week ,keep the pen clean its not that big
The only thing they have in common is the brooder has shavings in,maybe this is where it starts??????????

Be careful treating them with antibotics if your not sure what it is, I would put them on Vet rx and see how that does, it not harsh on there systems and all herbal. if there are no other signs going on as ( nasal discharge , sneezing, weezing, smelly yellow puss in the eyes) I would switch to the Vet rx and keep rinsing the eyes out with saline also you can do the tetrocycline ointment, and a home remedy of coffie grounds if you cant get the tetrocycline.
