Hen with swollen back side retaining liquid, help

Sorry about this, Trophamus.

I just took a Red Star hen to the vet a couple weeks ago because she had a swollen abdomin and thought for sure it was an internal laying issue since on of my Delaware hens had surgery in May for the same thing. Instead of finding a huge egg yoke mass she tried to drain off the fluid. She got 10 large syringes filled with yellowish brown fluid but there was not egg. She has not laid an egg and I know she is going to eventually die because another red star had this happen and she didn't make it either.

I 100% agree with speckledhen about production reds having these issues (this is my 3rd one in a year) having egg peritonitis and success rate of curing them is not very high.

I am sorry for you sick hen though.

I wnt outside earlyier and she looked terrible, her comb was purple and she was just shutting down, so my dad did the deed

It is never good to see the purple in the comb. It is definitely a sign that things are shutting down. I am sorry to hear that your hen didn't make it. Even more sorry that your dad had to put it down. There is a plus side to all this sadness is that she is not suffering any longer and she is happier for not being able to be the chicken she once was.

Didn't read all the replies BUT

I had a hen with a swollen backside, sort of underneath and a little bit between her legs.
I took her to the Vet, (yup the Vet) and he gave me Lasix. After the 10 day treatment she was still the same and he said to me, she is a $10.00 chicken. Meaning how much do I want to spend on a $10 chicken, I got the drift.
A friend did the deed for me and he cut her open and she was full of growths the size of large marbles and golf balls. So I presume it was cancer.

A friend had a chicken with the same symptoms. She is a ER Nurse so she drained off the abdomen and the hen is fine.

I have a hen now with the same symptoms and as long as she is eating and drinking and not in pain (that I can tell) I will let her live her life but when she is looking under distress and in pain. My friend will do the deed for me.

Chickenlady08 thanks

BlackBart - yeah my whole family are against taking chickens to the vet because they think a chicken is a chicken, in some ways i understand that and i still try my best for all of mine that get ill
