Hi everyone, tonight I noticed my 3 year old barred rock hen, Angela, has a swollen face on both sides. She also appears a bit pale. She hasn’t exhibited any other strange behavior. Does anyone know what this could be? Thanks in advance!

Have you added any new birds recently? Are any birds (or this hen) sneezing, having foam or bubbles in one eye, nasal discharge, or noisy breathing?

No new additions and I haven’t noticed anyone else with any issues either. I do have mareks in my flock and this particular hen is not vaccinated because she is one of my originals.

Chickens with Mareks have low immunity to common diseases. You could try giving some Tylosin in her water for 5 days. Jedds.com sells the powder, and dosage is 1 tsp per gallon of water for 5 days.

Thank you. Is it okay for the rest of the flock to take the medicine also? And ducks? They use the chickens drinkers

I prefer to treat only birds with symptoms. That can be done by keeping him inside a dog crate with food and medicated water during the day. He can roost at night.
