Hens and roosters

We are new to the chicken world and have a question for the Veterans.
I have bought a hen and rooster from a local flea market, when we purchased them they where in the same cage but it would seem that everyone else is keeping them apart.
They are ok in the yard together and sleep together in the pen we built for them,
should I build a sep pen for them to sleep in?

Welcome! They'll be fine living together; my rooster lives with my hens and they seem to enjoy his company. He's also good about pointing out tasty treats he finds and keeping an eye out for potential danger. I think the reason some people separate theirs is because they have multiple roosters, rather than that the roos are a problem with the hens.
