In addition to keeping him separated for extended periods of time you could give him a nice rooster pedicure cutting his nails and spurs and filing down the sharp edges to leave them nicely rounded and smooth.
He hasn't fully gotten his spurs yet, and I could keep the nails rounded. Thanks for the advice!

I tried this with a rooster I rescued a couple years ago but had to cull him because he became aggressive. I was never able to win his trust anymore. It didn't cause him any pain or quick his toe nails but he hated being handled
