Hens laying in left box only?

What.? .A Hen will go off if given a choice to lay eggs in privacy and security. All animals will do that if given a choice to do so..
My Dog if given the choice wanted to whelp in the back of the spare bedroom closet and not out in the middle of my living room rug. She had the puppies in her dog bed in my room but wasn't her first choice. She wanted privacy and security..
Privacy is human thing....don't anthropomorphize.

I have 40 laying birds and 10 nesting boxes--4,2,4. that are stacked. They all lay in 5 of the boxes, all on the top row. Why? Probably because they can. Although, just for variety once in a while they drop an egg on the floor under the boxes just to keep me guessing.

Big words don't change the outcome or the common sense.
Here's some smaller words:

I know that some people put curtains in their nest boxes so the girls have privacy. I think that can be counterproductive. I have 3 open boxes and a 4' community box with 2 access holes all accessed from inside the coop. The community box is quite dark inside. Some of the girls ALWAYS use the community box and others ALWAYS use the open boxes. What is true of all of them is they DO NOT want another hen coming into their box when they are awaiting an egg. They will scream bloody murder if one comes near. Only if the intruder is higher in the pecking order will she be allowed in or will the current occupant vacate the nest. I can't imagine how much fuss they would make if the intruder had to stick her head through a curtain to see if there was already a hen in the box.
