they are alot smarter than you thinkI got my four birds in June and at the time I got them, they were 19 weeks old. Initially, would only use one box and they'd wait their turn to lay. At least I assume that they were queueing because they don't go into the coop except to lay and sleep. They'd always lay by 8 AM. Now that they're older, I'm finding eggs in both boxes, usually three in the popular box, one in the other. Sometimes two and two, but they are not always there before I go to work at 9. I assume that they're not always ready to lay at sunup anymore. You'd think that more out of sync laying schedules would reduce the need to queue for one box and be therefore reduce the likelihood that one goes to the less popular box. I just don't get the logic of their little feather-covered brains of theirs.
