Hi all , would appreciate a little advice here as I am a relative newcomer to keeping hens. Was given a Yokohama cock and hen plus Yokohama/ Peking cross last autumn. Sadly he died recently so want to know whether my girls will be ok without him. The cross( Durga ) is still laying but ( this is another query) her eggs are Inedible. Taste like plastic/ chemicals. Not feeding them anything weird though! Also, this morning she had laid a kind of Siamese egg! They were much smaller than normal , no shell and joined by a tube... Very strange. I would like to increase the flock but broke my arm the same day cockerel died so will wait until I have both hands back in action! Any advice greatly appreciated!

I'm sorry to hear about your misfortune! It sounds like losing the roo stressed your hens, which could explain the strange eggs. How did it happen? Are they o.k. otherwise? Showing any signs of being sick? Acting differently?

! Great to have you aboard! Sorry to hear about your egg woes! I agree with what Sumi said - stress over losing the rooster. Hopefully they will be back in the swing again soon. Good luck to you!!

This is the place to be to ask all those chicken questions. :-)

thanks for your reply but her eggs tasted wierd before the cockerel died. it's such a mystery, nobody seems to know why this is happening..

Good luck with the healing, and welcome to BYC.
