Our family is new chicken owners. I had no idea how much we would fall in love with these birds! Long story short, three of our six chickens are SR, and we are so nervous that one or more of them are roosters. Today, May 20, they are almost exactly 9 weeks old. I google photos of lavender orpingtons pretty much every day to determine if Lizzie is a hen or a rooster. I would love your opinions on all three! 1) Lizzie is a Lavender Orpington (grey) -- I don't know how we will say goodbye to Lizzie if she is a roo!, 2) Tricky is a Blue Laced Red Wyandott (gold and black) -- do those neck feathers tell you experts anything?, and 3) Rainbow Trout is a Barred Rock (black and white) -- we think Rainbow is a roo and are mentally preparing.

Separately, when the kids hold the chickens their combs turn more reddish pink. I assume bc they are a little stressed, like a human getting flushed. Is this normal? They all seem to like to be help and jump on our laps.

:bun Welcome to Backyard Chickens! :welcome

You have three pullets. It’s normal for them to be flushed when out and about, it’s just excitement.
