Here comes IKE!

Just got home from errands and settling horses. I picked up one of our horses from the trainer in Victoria area to bring home. He will be better off inland more and away from the barns that might have damage. I have not turned the herd officially out since my show guys are always kept seperate. However we will probably Friday so they can get away from the buildings and have room to run if trees come down. After the whole Rita evacuation and all the horse's that they tried to transport and were stressed and became ill, the pasture seems like a better choice.

Victoria is starting to board up. They were taking down bill boards north of town when I left. Reports have it that they will close south bound traffic tomorrow and only allow people to head north. I got fuel outside of town (Mission Valley) after I picked up my horse and was told there that Victoria was pretty much out of gas already. I got enough to get us fueled up with what we need (generator, tractor, polaris and vehicles.) Water was pretty much gone in town (except for high dollar single bottles) and bread was going quick. I heard a lot of people say they are leaving. I can't imagine unless it is really really bad. I have so many animals that I would have to leave behind. Leave for a few hours would be one thing, but my fears is not being able to get back.

Texasgirl, I am about 30 miles due north of town headed toward Hallettsville. Small world isn't it?! I am hoping that mileage will help our ranch survive. The main thing I worry about with the livestock is downed trees where they can wonder off the place.

As for the quail, I don't have a garage to put them in. I do have a barn, but man it scares me to think of doing that. I suspect that we may loose that old cattle barn. I do have a storage trailer (big) I may put them in. We will see. I need to look at the trees around it.

Thanks for all the prayers. Keeping my fingers crossed we don't get a direct hit.

vicki you should be inland enough to not have it too bad. I am hoping! I have friends in Bastrop that always offer me a pasture if I need it. I just can't imagine hauling all my guys up there in traffic. Plus I just don't have a trailer big enough!

Good Luck!

We are right off 290 and the traffic has already started.
I'm like you, I would hate to leave my animals.

I saw on the news last night where they are comparing this one to Carla. I was only a toddler at that time, but we were in Austin and my Mom said water came in the house....

Were sandy enough to hopefully soak up a lot of that rain.

We had 4.5 inches here in an hour about a month ago and water was everywhere, then is subsided.

We need rain but no floods...

I have my fingers crossed for all of you on the coast. They're saying that it will still be a Cat 1 when it reaches as far inland as Austin. This year it sure seems like every tropical depression has become a big bada@@ed storm headed staight for the coast. Thinking good thoughts for all of you in Ike's path.

I will be praying for y’all!

We are still cleaning up from Gustav…still a lot of people without power here in Baton Rouge and the surrounding area. We are 90 miles inland and Gustav wreaked havoc on our big beautiful trees, so many people have trees on there homes. A lot of roof damage from the wind. It’s a mess here. I hope Ike loses steam and tuckers out before it hits the Texas coast.
God Bless,
Mitzi

Well, we work today to board up. Looks like we may end up on the back side of this storm. That doesn't mean we won't get a good amount of rain and wind though. I am sure by the morning we will all know where this thing is going to make landfall. It is looking more like Houston maybe in the path of the north east side. I have a lot of family up there and we know there are bycers there. Prayers.

See power outage is what I dread! We have a generator, but you can only have so much gas. They are selling out around here fast. Red, glad you are safe. Hope your damage wasn't too great.

Countrymom, I just mapquested you so I can keep track of how you are doing. I do believe you're far enough inland, but depending on where it hits, I know you'll be affected by it. I also went thru 4 hurricanes in 2004, and it wasnt fun. One after the other after the other. Every weekend. My horses stayed outside in all of it, and were just fine. The only thing I was really worried about were things blowing around and hitting them. But they were fine, they just hunkered down and dealt with it. Good luck to you, and check back in as soon as you can.

My daugther's boyfriend just arrived in San Antonio for boot camp for the Air Force. She's really worried that the base is going to get hit by Ike. If anyone knows if it's going to even come close let me know so I can calm her nerves.
