What's wrong, Bobbie? Bator troubles again?


Yep, It has given me fits from day one, but, I have learned some things as the days have went along. I'm not holding out to much hope for a good hatch, from what I see when I candle not alot of progress

Makes me sad, they should be due Fri/Sat so we will see?

Well, sometimes you just learn alot on that first incubation, Bobbie, and use it for practice for the next time. Maybe all isn't lost. Keep me posted.

If you do decide to sell Scout and Silver let me know I may want them for my great grandfather. He is enthralled with my chickens and I think he would enjoy them very much (he grew up in a very rural area and raised chickens durring his childhood in the twenties). I plan on going to his place at pickwick lake soon and converting an old shed into a coop so that he can keep a few. Anyway I would be happy to make the trip to you because I know that you do not ship. Please keep me in mind. Oh I would not be able to take them until the spring, just to let you know.

Thank you, Adam. I would love for you to have them. I am not ready to let them go just yet anyway, so it could very well be the spring before I do. How nice of you to fashion him a coop from that shed! How many chickens are you going to get for him?

I would like 1 roo and maybe 5 hens. (I know this is not the most desierable roo/hen ratio) He is perfctly able to care for more but I think less is more in this case. He is an animal nut and when he saw my chickens he went crazy and I thought it would be fun for him. He recently fell feeding turkeys at the dam and broke his neck the same way that Christopher Reeve did. Now are you ready for this, my 87 year old great grandfather that works at the pickwick store selling fishing supplies from 1am to 6am (yes, AM as in the morning) recoverd from his broken neck with it in better shape than it was before he broke it! How does that happen, I swear to God that man will out live all of us! So not many chickens because I would like to also get him a turkey (so he will stay away from the wild ones, LOL).

Adam, that is an amazing story about your great grandfather! My dad is 87. He has great stories about living through the Depression by raising most of their own food, and hunting for the rest. Now I am sharing my chicken stories with him, and he gets such a kick out of hearing about my girls. I know he is surprised that I even HAVE chickens, because I grew up a "city girl". Your great grandfather sounds like a true gem!

He really is! His name is Virgil and I can remember as a child his garden (which he no longer has

) and he used to grow the largest vegetables. Maybe because I was small then but I remember the the tomatoes being so big, as big as my head and the cucumber vines were covered with huge leaves and cucumbers. He grew squash and sweet potatoes and carrots and celery, watermelons, strawberries and he had loads of black berry bushes. His place was, and still is my favorite place on earth. A little town that time has almost forgot (they have a dollar tree). It was my heaven as a child growing up in the city and still is now that I am an adult. I love to go and visit my grandmother, and Virgil as well as the rest of my mom's family that still lives in Counce, TN.

He sounds great. My own Dad is 86, but his father lived to 100 years old and was on the farm alone after my grandmother died till he was up into his upper 90's. My dad's family were farmers from way back. I spent alot of time on my grandfather's farm as a kid, but I think it still surprised my dad when I got chickens a few years ago.
Your 1 roo to 5 hens isnt bad really. Suede only has 4 right now and they are getting along really well. Scout has only 3 himself. I think it depends on the rooster. None of their girls are barebacked at all, either. Now, if Suede sees a NEW woman, he chases her down with a vengeance, so I have to be careful that the main flock is all in their pen before I let him out.
