One thing that occured to me about the carton hatching...
The chicks are fighting gravity. Doesn't that make it more difficult and exhausting to get out? Maybe one should start out with them in the carton to hatch the big active ones. Once those are out, I would put the rest of the eggs on the bottom of the brooder so that those weaker ones are more likely to be able to get out. Just a newbies honest opinion.
