My buff bantam cochin(Sunny) went broody today. I put 7 eggs under her including my husband new trio of Birchen marans started back laying today so I put that egg under her too. Hoping for a better hatch with her. Her sister(Brownie) didnot due very well. She abandon her baby chick after it hatched and it died. I can't even get near her pen with out her trying to attack me. So I got my husband to move the other hen out of there so she won't be disturbed. Keeping my fingers crossed.
Wishing you luck. I can't wait until my chicks are old enough to start laying eggs so I can try with my own eggs.

Is it to late to join in... I set 24 eggs of 8-30, they are on day 12 today. So far 20 are looking good. It's going to be like Christmas when they hatch, cause the lady I got the eggs from has about every breed of chicken there is, so who knows what I will get when they hatch out.

Thanks for the Welcome! I am really wanting a higher percentage this go round - just like all of us!

How many days in transit on your last hatch in comparison to your others, might I ask?
Gosh let me think. Well some of the others it was just 2 days . The great hatch i think was 3 or 4 day travel and in the heat so go figure. No ice pack either like i did with the other 3 before this
Only thing something you said. where from ......i have to see where they all came from .Most are from Tenn or SC or south around there. I dont order from places far far away from Mo., but curious now where the LBs were from .
I pretty much think it was PURE luck though HAHA
Serious thought... maybe these are from hens that egg innards arent as sensitive to travel? In the genes?

My hen really wants to hatch!!!! She is just sitting there doing nothing. I hope she is drinking water cause I hear silkies will some times want to hatch sooo bad that they starve there selfs or die of thirst!!!!! Scary

One of my silkies is currently broody and she is so different from my first broody. The first one was a bit evil, didn't want to eat unless it was hard boiled egg, and didn't want to get up to go poo or anything. I had to make her get off the nest. With Blackie, she's gotten so tame compared to her skittish normal self. She eats like a horse, her crop is always full, and when I take her off the nest she'll walk around until she goes poo and then hurries right back to her eggs.

Just make sure she has food and water nearby and she'll do fine. :)

So I decided to build myself an egg candler today. I went to our local cigar store and asked if they had any empty cigar boxes. The guy gave me 5 wooden boxes that are perfect for candlers. Next went to Walmart and bought an extension cord and light socket (less than $4.) Came home and drilled 2 holes in one of the boxes. One on the side for the socket and one on the top to cradle the egg. Took about an hour to complete and for the cost of the ext. cord and light socket I have a GREAT candler. I tested it out on my Araucana eggs and we have 3/10 good eggs on Day 9. I was a little bummed out at that number so I said what the heck let's try the Silkie eggs. I had just set them last Thursday and really wasn't expecting much. So I take out egg #1 place it on the candler and it is ALIVE!!! On to egg#2...ALIVE!!! and this goes on for the entire dozen. All 12 eggs have movement and veining!!! From what I have heard Maran eggs are very hard to candle because of their dark color. Well I decided to give it a shot and guess what... I can see through Maran eggs with my new candler and we have babies in those too. I am thinking from now on I will definitely go with local eggs. No more shipped ones.
Nice one! Must have kept the wife happy that it only took an hour to make

UPDATE:
Day 13 - looks like I'm exactly at 50% viable kicking & thriving eggs 16 of 32 - all shipped
Honestly, the time has kind of flown by. Seems strange to think that I'll be going into lockdown late this coming Sunday or early Monday
