Here we go again - I'm hatching more goslings!!

Good morning guys. Well, my remaining babies are still with me and everyone is doing well... when I was out of town yesterday, hubby built a 3rd large pen in garage and moved the 7 3-week-old ducks out... and there is a party going on now in my garage with 15 ducks chatting it up. All that is remaining in brooder room are my four 2.5 week old goslings, my dynamic duo Molasses and his BFF toulouse, and my two precious buffs. It's nice.

Got 4 more buff eggs shipping out tomorrow morning.... and my lovely cayuga egg seller/friend is sending me 3-4 eggs on Monday. I really do not want to have another round of eggs to cook... and honestly, folks, hatching the buffs are way harder than any other breed of goose or duck, so really not looking forward to hatch time. But, I am determined to have a breeding pair/trio of buffs and a bigger flock of cayugas. So... gosh darn it, this will be my LAST set of eggs for the season.

Mohillbilly, the easiest and best way to get eggs from Carole is through her ebay auctions. However, you can also reach her at [email protected] or by phone (831) 761-2963. Her buffs have slowed way down, but her greys are still laying like crazy. Should be no problem to get eggs from her.

Goosed, I am still happy to send you goslings (assuming they hatch out)... but I feel I should let you know that Carole just hatched out a bunch of goslings and could send you babies a lot sooner (and probably safer) than me.

Glad to hear your babies are well. And I know you have to be pretty excited to be setting more eggs! Even after you said this batch was the last LOL!!

If it's ok, I would still like to get a pair from you. You have helped me so much, and it would be kinda special to have some babies you hatched

Thanks for letting me know Carole has some too.

Goosed, that is very kind of you to say. I will do my best to hatch and ship dewlaps to you next month!!!

Erin update for you. Pulled an egg that the air cell was fluid filled. Opened and it was not fertile. I rolled the yolk 360 to make sure. The shell was even inside and out on inspection. Left two as one looks to maybe doing something. Will check them tonight and either keep or toss at that time.
12 eggs rolling into a lockdown this weekend.
Just raided a nest and took 7 eggs, all are growing strong, left her with three.
22 Silver Appleyard eggs cooking away, 36 Easter Egger chicken eggs for an order also cooking, and a dozen khaki Cambell for an order.
Oh and hubby's French white Scovy started laying!

Iain, not sure what you know about shipping lives and eggs. All facilities are suppose to be NPIP before shipping. Some states require additional testing before you can ship to them.

Lives can not be shipped in temps 85 and higher or 35 or lower. You must check temps at the sending and receiving location before shipping.

Day old newly hatched can be sent in the brown 25 chick boxes that do not have filters.

Anything older than that have to be sent in the red & white boxes with filters installed. The single stall is a good size.

Lives have to go express mail.

No food or water in the boxes as it can damage the cardboard.

Grow gel is most often used when shipping lives. As is peas and corn for older birds.

There is more but typing from my phone here. That is the basics though.

Oh plot your egg setting so you don't have them hatching Wed - Sat, to ship day olds you want them to hatch Mon, Tues, Wed. It can be a two day trip when shipping so sending Wed can be a Friday arrival.

I will do some measurements of our feed mix and post. I use scoops so I measure by them, but can do more accurate measuring pretty easily.
Red cell is a liquid supplement made for horses.

it can be found in quart and gallon sizes. Most feed stores carry it, places online like Randall Burkey also sell it. New birds, molting birds, injured/sick birds will get a tablespoon or two over feed daily. We use it with the goats as well. Always had it available for my horses, so made sense to use it now too.
Marty, I use water to help lay the down flat when vent sexing. It makes a huge difference.
Thanks so much for that tip. I couldn't sex my calls because of all the fluff, maybe I will be able to with this hatch. Never thought about getting them wet.

Oh Iain, thats awful.

Psue is right, its been a rough year. Most of us have had bad hatches and losses to healthy stock. Its so frustraiting. Iain, Don't you have more buff in the incubator? I thought there were severall eggs. Of course, if you get more eggs, and hatch more babies out, you'll have your choice of the best from several for you breeding program, and you can always sell the others. (Use the money to get more eggs next year!)

Your a nice lady, Janet, and you desearve a good hatch and grow out. (me too darn it! And PSue, Celtic, Erin, and everyone....)

x2, sorry Iain.

How do you get the eggs? My poor turkey is still broody because I am in no way brave enough to come near her on her nest, don't know how I'll manage to get underneath a broody goose to pull eggs or check on things.

Hi Iain, glad babies are well and I bet it is loud with the poultry party. I've got quail, pheasent, turkey, 12 ducks, and a batch of chicks hanging out in the spare bedroom/brooder room. I'm going to clean out a garage room this weekend, and move babies. I can only take them for about a week. I'm tired of changing boxes every day, ready for the bigger birdie brooders now.

MoHillbilly - Cayugas are fine meat birds, and very hardy. Oh, FYI, some can in fact fly. I've seen mine do it. I have different ducks now, but I still trim Khaki females wings, they also fly at will.

I'll be gone tonight, there is a school fundraiswer with comedians, beer and wine tasting, auctions, and food. Need I say more? LOL Dh and I are gonna go play.
