Awww Iain, I'm so sorry about your baby

I know how upsetting it must be. I couldn't put the younger goslings in with Ester because she kept nipping, so they are in a separate brooder box with the adopted chick. Ester is by himself and does fine. He's out more than in anyways lol.

It appears that it will not work out putting buff baby (who I have named Barley) with the dynamic duo. While Barley got along great with my duckling, Molasses, Erin toulouse kept chasing it around the pen biting it... and Barley was crying non-stop. So I have Barley with me in my office now and things are peaceful and quiet again.

So, trying to find my options here. I found an ad for a 2 week old silver apple duckling that I have left a message for. There is a 2nd ad for a pair of female cayuga hatchlings to be delivered Wed/Thurs this week from Metzer. Last time I checked my feed store was selling straight run cayugas, too.

Celtic, not sure how far away Renee (Molasses egg seller) is from you, because she has cayuga ducklings, but is afraid to attempt to ship. I am checking distance. If she is not far from you, perhaps you would be willing to help ship them?

What do you guys think is the best way to go?

So, if local silver appleyard seller does not get back to me. Do I go to the feed store for ducklings or call the lady who ordered female cayugas from metzer? Or... do I try to put Barley back with the dynamic duo and hope that the bully toulouse will chill out?

ETA: Barley seems happy to chill on floor at my feet... perhaps I could buy a baby playpen on wheels and keep him with me until I figure this out?

I'm so sorry Iain.

And I'm sorry for the complications this causes with roommates for babies. I totally understand. Lucky the duck is in with 6 chicks a week older than him. He's grown so fast though, that hes the size of a full size femal Khaki but I don't dare put him in with the new babies.

The dog got another one of them when we were in the process of moving them out to the garage brooder yesterday.

On a better note, the other grey dewlap is making a spider, so its 100% from Carole on the 2nd group.

Marty, very sorry about your dog getting another baby. Bad dog!! It is one of my biggest fears having 3 dogs in house.... so far, I've been lucky.

Yes, the naughty thing. As soon as we set down the crate to unlock the garage door, she was on them. Didn't even know she'd followed us. Paddled her fanny this time, and off to doggy jail for an hour. She was quick as a whip. Could definatley see the Jack Russel in her.

Glad they are safely in the garage now. Even have the baby gate in place just inside the door.

Iain I would create a barricade to keep them separated, but allowing to see each other. The buff baby on one side and the other two still together. No need for additional babies, and after a few days they should be good together.

Marty, bad dog! You have raised ducks for a long time now have you had issues with her in the past? We had great success with my male doxie by putting a muzzle on him and working with him around the birds. After a couple of weeks of working with him he was fine around hatchlings. Now he can be outside, or alone with birds with no concerns.


8/10 have internally pipped now, last two have heavy shadowing so just waiting for them to pip. 5/8 have externally pipped so today should start having progress from them. Lots of Peaches eggs in this group.

Celtic, Since I had originally planned to put the buffs with the dynamic duo, I have had their pens next to each other from day 2, separated by window screen. I also took turns letting the pairs out into room and they would go up to the pens and say hello to all the other babies through the screen. Last night, I pushed the little box up right against the pen, so that their beds would be close to each other. Buff baby didn't cry for too long before falling asleep, but he was pretty beat from his big day. You think I should keep trying to put buff with the dynamic duo instead of getting 1-2 ducklings for buff baby?
