Chicory, aka, Erin Toulouse, just gave me quite a scare (for the 2nd time). 1st time, I heard him freaking first thing in the morning and I found him cast (like a horse) in his sleeping corner, with his head up a little ways on the wall. I figured it was a freak accident, and switched from using a thick pillow to a folded fleece blanket for his sleeping corner. This time, it looks like he somehow tripped or slipped by water bowl and again wound up on his back, pedaling air and not able to right himself. I flipped him over, picked him up and let him lay in my lap until he got over his panic attack. He is perfectly fine, but scared me half to death. I switched his waterbowl back to one I use for smaller goslings, which he can walk through it without getting caught on a higher lip. But it makes me wonder how long I have to worry about him doing this? I assume at some point his coordination will be better or his body will be develop so that he can right himself on his own?

ETA: 1st time was a week ago.

I tried to get a pic, and it;s not very clear but all the black spots are the holes in the membrane I was talking about. Membrane looks good right, semi clear and not white and shrinkwrapped? I have a jar of egg shells that have been baked in the oven I keep for the quail since oyster shell is too big for them, so I stuck a piece of shell from that over the hole with a drop of water to glue it on to keep baby from drying out from the hole I made.

Iain, we have adult ganders who REFUSE to look down and trip daily. They look around "I ment to do that" on their faces. The lower the lip the better on items around them.

I can picture that easily, how funny.

Thanks. I did it with the calls when they hatched, that way they had air and I had a window and less chance of shrinkwrap.

Lovely.... just what I need.... a clumsy gosling. Will he get coordinated enough to right himself without help? He looks like he will give himself a heart attack trying to pedal the air to get back up!

Gosling has moved it's bill to my pip hole and knocked off it's shell cap. It's got a black little bill.

Humidity is at 71%, should I keep the membranes moist with a qtip or leave the bator closed and keep an eye on it?

Awesome, Julie!!! Either decision sounds good. It's not a bad idea to keep a close eye while you wait and see... but it won't hurt baby either to dampen membrane with qtip.
