Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

That's so cool! When I move out I think I'm going to get a cockatoo instead of the going the normal route and get a dog.

Think long and hard before you decide to get a bird that will outlive you for so many reasons.

Better a cockatiel (20 years) or shorter lived bird. A friend has an Umbrella that is on his third owner and he's a little crazy. Worse yet she needs to rehome him.

Many of the 200+ Macaws I worked with had come from homes that could no longer keep them as well as makeshift zoos. A lot of psychological problems in that group.

This is where they should be housed. You can see the Scarlet flying along the beach.

So as not to completely hijack this thread. I probably have LF roosters now because of my time in CR. I've had hens off and on all my life, sometimes hundreds. I often wondered why Costa Ricans all get up so early. They're usually out working at dawn. Then I figured it out. Many people in the cities had chickens and roosters. I didn't have an alarm clock and I was never late for work. I grew to love waking up that way instead of that annoying alarm. It's too bad I can't hear my roosters inside my house. Maybe this summer I'll set up a hammock near one of the coops.
The only downside was when there was lightning in the middle of the night and the chorus would start.

They are not mutually exclusive...you can have both! Personally, from what I've seen of Cockatoos, Cockatiels and Parrots, I'd just as soon keep a chicken in the house.

Those exotic birds are beautiful but require serious attention to keep their areas clean. Why not a Chimp?

@ ChickenCanoe: Thank you for your concern.  I'm not sure what prompted you to correlate the fact that I carry a firearm to Pittsburgh with my proposed trip(s) to Costa Rica but please be comforted in the fact that I know the laws of the United
States and those of Costa Rica in far more depth than many.

I am a world traveler and have been to CR several times.

Thank you for your misplaced concern.:thumbsup

Yes... interesting comment... If you carry it is your responsibility to know the reciprocals. I don't go to or through a state without verifying the recips haven't changed since I was last there. And I will go out of my way to avoid those states which do not acknowledge my rights. ;-P

Had a SIL comment last year that she would never permit a gun of any kind in her home... I simply commented that she had on thousands of occasions over the years including that moment. My husband just grinned at me knowing I was carrying and where (as was he)... everyone else's mouth dropped. To this day I still can't figure out why that is so unusual, I simply assume everyone carries. It's part of daily dressing for me so I don't even think about it... it's natural.

Yes...very good points. I can legally carry a concealed weapon in Pa.

OOPS: Gotta' check really fast to see if I can legally carry a few chickens from Pa., back into West Virginia.

LOL I'd rather NOT have my face mauled off. A chimp attack or a bird attack. I'll go with the bird. Maybe I'll just get a micro pig instead.......

You probably just need NPIP papers from the breeder or papers saying they tested negative for pullorum and Avian Influenza. Then again I'm far from an expert.

I knew a couple that wouldn't allow their son to play with toy guns. Now THAT I thought was weird.
When they came to visit once and their son and mine came out of his room both carrying toy guns. They freaked out. I tried to understand but just couldn't.
