Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Sorry, I did want chicks. I just noticed that some people only sell straight run and we aren't allowed to have roosters.
Hatcheries are fine for few backyard layers, if you find no other option. Also if you can find a breeder in the area, some pullets that they chose not to keep is a reasonable option.

Take your time. Get a book. Run some scenarios through your head. Put something together. Then source some birds for the empty pen. It's easier that way.

LOL I'd rather NOT have my face mauled off. A chimp attack or a bird attack. I'll go with the bird. Maybe I'll just get a micro pig instead.......
Cockatoos are very needy birds. Many feather pluck when they don't get enough attention and amusement. So will Congo African Greys ; the Timneh Greys, not so much. I'm not sure how a cockatoo would tolerate being alone all day.

Hey..if you really want the things, get 'em. But plan to live alone for a while or have a wife who doesn't mind lots of cleaning and who really loves the birds too! Try to meet your wife in a pet store instead of a bar or God forbid a ......!

You know I'm just funnin' you.

Took the 'Prius Catcher' off the truck since a quick road check revealed clear sailing all the way. I've even considered taking a less serious mode of transportation but better not change now since the weather is really in flux. Might should have left the plow on but not sure how the attendant at The Fairmont Hotel would deal with parking it underground.

I have about 25 miles to cross from Pa. Back into WV with chickens. I'm just going to go get them and make a run for the boarder!

Again...just kidding...no testing required but I think Jimmie's place is tested.

I was going to say, and like George said first, get your situation ready and then find a breeder. They will generally sell a couple of hens with a rooster. Or if you get in touch with someone early enough, and you're not interested in showing/breeding, you could take some of their culls that at least look like the breed. Be patient. Maybe you won't get chicks that way but at least you won't have 20 out of 25 birds be roosters that you have to figure out what to do with.

I understand that I need to get the pen and supplies first. However, I don't want to be stuck waiting until next chick season to get the chicks I want. We are only allowed to have 6 hens, and we won't be showing them or breeding. Another reason I asked about coop plans is because in WI it gets very cold and snowy and I assumed that would affect how the coops needs to be built in order to protect my hens.
