Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

Aaaahh, faith renewed!

G, you're correct in that my determination will see me through....I've set my sights on certain characteristics and will not waver

.

3riverschick, thank you for the offer to help and I may accept the offer yet but perhaps not until next year. As my plans take shape I feel the need to extend my timeline; aside from building coops there are fences to erect, forage to establish, etc.....I want to predator test my enclosures with some feed store chickens before investing in stock and attend a largish show in the late fall (my first experience being disappointing and resembling some sort of tawdry yard sale, lol). To answer your question, I'm not ready to declare myself to a breed quite yet

I have ideas and am working through the possible solutions.

I'm happy that the general consensus seems to favor the possibility of standard bred stock being available for a "newbie"

. I do have time and patience enough.

Thank you all!

Oh well see? There ya go! Do come on after the show and tel us all about it.! It's kinda funny thinking of the feed store birds as coyote fodder. And what did you do with your life , chickie? Oh I was coyote fodder!

Well they all serve a purpose and that's a good one. I had a young opossum break into my run once. Fortunately I had forted the birds up in the locked coop at night. 10 days later he decided to come back and Mr. Havahart Trap was waiting for him.

Dispatched to greater glory .

On a happy note, and by means of promoting one of my breeds, wow. We came in today after a long afternoon of brush burning. Too tired to make the planned risotto, I took the Dorking off the burner that had been stewing this afternoon. We just took out the jar of mayonnaise and went at them. Can you say, "Delicious!"? I mean--really good. Our Dorkings are just darned yummy. That and they're pretty as all get out.

Man, if I could get that body silhouette sans the pantaloons and a bit higher

I think you're doing just fine. If you produced that one male, you can produce another. Plus, I'm sure you'll be able to get some stock from him.

I really enjoy your photos of your carcasses and stock, YHF. You are really getting a good shape to those birds! Easy to see without any color to distract the eye.

One thing I used to do to train my eye to see composition, was only look at stuff in Black & White. Color distracts and deceives the eye. Take pictures of your stock and then turn them black and white. This of course only works if you don't have black and white chickens!

They look good Joseph. I like them both.

I could only hope to get the Catalanas where your Dorkings are. I realize they are not where you want them, but I do not think I have seen any Dorkings of any color have as much potential as these.

The Anconas are only missing a comb, LOL. I like the female in the seventh photo.

Right now, and for a long time, the Catalanas are a picture that I have in my mind. I try to picture what they could be, instead of what they are.

This is a male that I started with. It is a crude photo, and a generally poor bird. Especially concerning color. If it was back and white, you fixed the tail, and comb . . . . then you see only the pride. They have a way about them.
