Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

I bought a set of thick writing different colored magic markers to color code my turkey poults so I don't get breeds mixed up when I move them from the hatcher to the brooder. I put a single line on the top of their head and it lasts for 2 weeks or more. Got that idea from Kevin Porter since that is how he marks his poults when he ships.

On the wing bands, I started using them this year and absolutely love them. They are so easy to apply and I only had one come off, probably I did not put it on correctly. I am doing several outcrosses this year and have hatched a lot of chicks. With the wing bands, I can keep track of individuals without a doubt. I keep a spreadsheet on the computer that tells me breed, parentage, date hatched, sex and comments as they get older; I sort the spreadsheet by wing band # and by breed; if a bird dies or is culled, I put a D or a C after the #, then when I resort, those get put at the end of the list. That way I can keep track of why I culled them, and who the parents were, all on one handy spreadsheet. Any time I move birds around, taking from one pen to another as they grow or I separate by sex, I have the spreadsheet and mark them off and make a note of where they are (I have multiple pens). I'm sure there are other handy tools one could figure out.

What happened to the way the Gamefowl people used, Leather Punch. Don

I'm really liking this idea. It looks more secure than the rinky dinky toe punch. Cheaper too. $7 w/prime on Amazon.

Hi,
I went with Desertmarcy's and Wisher's ideas about coloring the chicks. They all have
different numbers of what looks like Columbian black dots on their heads. Made with
black magic marker. It's interesting how fast the wing feathers grow. Yesterday I
feather sexed them and the results were :
6/11/14 eval" Knight and Day ex Sweetie ( outcross): 1 cockerel ex 5 pullets
Tux ex May ( inbred pure) : 3 cockerels and 2 pullets
-------------
Today I tried again with much different results:
6/12/14 eval: Knight and Day ex Sweetie: 4 cockerels and 2 pullets
Tux ex May: 5 cockerels ( Suspect at least one is a pullet).
So I know the pure strain can be feather sexed so I am going with 6/11 results
and putting the differences down to wing feather development..
Best,
Karen

you might have better luck holding them up to your ear. They will tell you if they are boys or girls.

I've been working on my grow-out hoop coop and some quilt blocks for a swap I'm involved in on here. Between that and hatching and watchin' babies grow and my grand father passing away this week, I've been pretty swamped.

I also had to do a little rearranging in that I have a hen that has been being crossed with a certain male who has given me lots of fertile eggs from other hens but not from the this hen I'm really trying to get nice babies from. None of her eggs have been fertile. I remember someone talking about that on here a while back. I thought I'd try something... I moved the male to the pen adjacent to hers where he can see her all the time but I only let him in with her in the evening for about two minutes. Before, I was taking her to his pen every couple of days. He didn't waste any time mating her at all but he only took a single dip. Now, he takes at least 6 before he gets off her back and I'm letting that happen almost every evening. I'm really hoping for some fertile eggs from her. She's my oldest hen and she still lays well. She'll lay two days in a row, then skip a day, lay the next day, skip the next and then start all over so she's a pretty good layer for being almost 5 years old.

Oh Lacey,
I am so sorry to hear of your grandfather's passing. That is always hard.

Hubby Bob and I wee discussing making grow out hoop houses today.
Growing out all these staggered hatches of 3 to 6 chicks is going to be interesting.
Do you have some pics to share? We are wondering just how to make it a walk-in
and put a door in it. Do you have a coop in year's or just a tarp over it? These are
7 egg bators but we don't hold the eggs for longer than 6-7 days so if we have less
than 7, that;s what we put in at week.
Thanks so much for sharing,
Karen , 3 more chicks hatched today (Tux ex May)
