Heritage Large Fowl - Phase II

I agree! And I offer sincere apologies for my part in derailing this thread. Please forgive me, one and all, and please help me remember the purpose of the thread when I do participate. I won't mind a reminder at all, as I'm getting a little old in the head and could use the help.

BGMatt - please pass along hearty congrats on the placing from we heritage LF folks on BYC! If he's not a BYC member, perhaps Mr. Volk would enjoy hanging with us in this thread?

There is NO doubt, in my mind, that Jim Volk has terrific birds.   Gosh.  Just something.  Maybe it was Bob or maybe it was Ken Weaver, but anyhow, I believe Jim Volk and Bob Blosl could trace their primary stock back to similar sources, perhaps even to Wisconsin and the famous Halbach family.  In any case, great job, Jim!!!
I am such a sucker for true bred White Rocks, as most folks here know. :)

I know you are! What do you think of his head?

This line goes back a long long time. I think Jim had 7 of them there and they were all like clones of each other. I know he doesn't show as much as he used to but anyone out west who wants real Rocks should try to talk him out if a pair or trio (if you can get him to stop talking about how great White Rocks are)

Edit: Wynette I'm not 100% he even has a computer. I'll pass it along next time I talk to him.

I walked out to the breeding coop yesterday and took another look at Junior's son, Knight and Day. His dam is my avatar. He is the spitting image of his sire. I am so happy. Since Junior was prepotent for himself, I can't wait to see what his closely line bred son will throw. Feb. can't come fast enough so I can start incubating eggs, smile.

You know it's cruel and unusual punishment to not share pictures with us after statements like that right?

I'm SO SO with you - 2014 is chock FULL with different matings and crosses I have planned for my Silver Penciled Rock. While my line is most definitely not cloning themselves yet, I am hopeful that within a few years, I'll be MUCH further along! (I can't thank a few of you folks on here enough for your support, feedback, and good guidance.)

"3. Long, productive outdoor lifespan. Heritage Chicken must have the genetic ability to live a long, vigorous life and thrive in the rigors of pasture-based, outdoor production systems. Breeding hens should be productive for 5-7 years and roosters for 3-5 years."

Of course the SOP is the most important aspect of the Heritage Breed Definition, but not the only one. For me its more than just preserving the chicken, but the manner in how it is kept, as well. I know I am in the minority on this and I respect that. I hope the previous discussion on forage and cover crops would be considerate appropriate on the Farming and Homesteading with Heritage Breeds thread. There is no lack of emphasis on good breeding and the SOP on that thread, Joseph and many other see to that.

Thank you all for every thing I have learned so far.

Mark
