I've raised 3 wonderful rotties. Yup, better be an alpha. lol

I am open to suggestions on working dogs or sporting dogs. NO hounds, no terriers, no toys. No rottie, no golden, no German shepards. Looking for a working dog: obedient, watchdog, fetches, agility.

ANyone have experience with CCR?
Best working dogs I have that aren't lgd's are tervs... All around great at everything except being an lgd. Protective and intelligent and intuitive. Breed Champions who are also herding, obedience, agility, and tracking champions.

I love them because they have dimmer switches... a lot of dog when you need it, but can chill out next to your chair when you don't.
That's an interesting dog-- though based on all my reading the tervs fall into that extreme group that is very protective. Can you suggestion a breed that is more moderate, a watchdog type rather than protection type. Remember I live in Massachusetts!! lol

Nothing better than a plain and simple Lab. Loyal, intelligent, hard working, good temperament, hardy, healthy and easy to train. I call them the Cadillac of dogs...a smooth ride and dependable performance.
I've had a bench dog that was a lovely tempered dog and a total lump. Loved everyone-- just what I was looking for-- fit my life at the time. Another lab I had was an American field dog-- a rescue. Still the best dog I ever had, because he was not a rottie everyone loved him. Intelligent, loved kids, great watchdog, never yanked me around. If I could find another Hunter I would be thrilled. I see Amerrican dogs all around me but cannot find a breeder in the area-- how weird is that.

Thought about a Heeler? Our blue Heeler can't do much in the way of agility these days after injuries and knee surgeries but she still can run and fetch and has done well with being a watchdog and was the fastest to obedience train of all our dogs and does well with anticipating what we want from her.

Beagles are good dogs when it comes to mammals like coons, fox, rabbits, coyotes. But not good dogs for protecting flocks cause males seem to kill chickens unless trained really good, females are easy to train to not kill chickens but they loss there hunting touch quick if there not trained a lot. But they go crazy for rabbits regardless, won't help with flying birds like hawks and they almost ignore them...

Beagles are the main sources for hunting dogs in Greece/Italy. I was only trying to help with the truth.

A good beagle is hard to beat but they are incurable roamers. I'm an ol' hound man and the beagle sits high on the list for some purposes but hardly serious guardians. One trouble is, if they get something running, they will follow it across state lines, never looking back 'til they have run their leg clear off!

Yeah, You can't free range Beagles cause they are wild... By letting them out, say good bye to your beagle..
