Ditto on the abbreviations and slang. It makes following conversations difficult, unless I already know what someone is going to say.

I can see why you say that, it has gotten ridiculous and abbreviations are thrown about haphazardly. However, I still see that they are useful with long discussions involving more than one breed. I try to always say the full name of each breed in question the first time I include it, and then use the abbreviations after that.

For example:

I am breeding Silver Campines in an attempt to improve the type and hope to get more people interested in breeding them. I realize that it would be easier to work with Golden Campines because while they are still a rare breed, there are many more people who raise the gold variety than raise the silver variety. At shows, if there are any Campines at all, it will most likely be GCs and not SCs. Because the GCs are more popular than the SCs, there has been more progress made in breeding the GCs to standard and therefore, good GCs are easier to acquire.

I'm not just being lazy in shortening the name, I have found that I can't type as fast as I think and if I wish (there I go again) to make my point understandable, I have to hurry. I have to hurry!

Hey guys, my name is justin and I'm 15. I hear all this talk about competing, showing, and trying to preserve heritage breeds and I would like to know how I can get involved in it. I know I'm young and might not be able to do it now but for future reference it would help to know. I really want to make an impact in the "poultry conservation community" but don't know how to start. I have 5 dark brahma pullets and used to have some white leghorns. Loved them to death. Anyways any help would be great thnx!

There are plenty of folks who will be more than happy to get you started in the right direction on this thread and will direct you to a thread that is dedicated to the conformation aspects of breeding...

Justin there are some good poultry breeders in your region. I would recommend locating who those are.

Have you been involved with 4H?

Did you literally love your Leghorns to death?

@gjensen I would like to become active in 4H but I do not know how. My parents, although they don't mind me having chickens, don't necessarily take interest in it like I do. So I am kind of on my own in finding people for help. That's why I came to you guys. How can I join 4H? Can I get in touch with good breeders from there?
