I found out today that my RIR's are heritage. What's the difference?
a production red is a cross between new hamphires and RIRs and are usually more agressive (from what ive heard)
Quote:Ok. Thanks. My chicks seem pretty laid back but I was just curious.
NOTE: These are not my pictures.
This one is NOT:
This one IS a Heritage RIR (Robert Blosl photo):
Quote:Not necessarily, I think there might be one or two hatcheries that call that cross a "Production Red"
There are two popular types of "Production Red" one is a R.I. Red bred solely for egg production and selectively bred solely from the R.I. Red.
The other type "Production Red" is a cross of a R.I. Red and a Leghorn.
Keep in mind that the New Hampshire was also bred solely from the R.I. Red with no other outside blood added.
Heritage Red are only available from a breeder period. If you get R.I. Red's from a hatchery then it is a "Production Red".
Here is a picture of one of my Heritage Rose Comb Red's
Heritage RIRs are SOOOOO beautiful!
