Herniated Chick needs help! (graphic photo)

Awesome job on that chick! Is she still alive?

Here's the worst one I had. It basically hatched all by itself while I was at work & this is how it looked when I got home. I applied some triple antibiotic daily & used the incubator as its ICU.

At 1.5 weeks, it was small & thin but other than keeping it separated (with another runt chick) I didn't have to do much. The chick was nicknamed Hope - because we were hoping it would live.

Around 3 weeks, the scab fell off & Hope was fine.

Uh Oh! That comb was looking red! Now we were "Hoping" it was a female.

It took about 9 months, but Hope eventually laid an egg!

...and I hope your story also has a happy ending.

Awwwww that's so so motivational story
Much love to ur girl

But I want to know why this thing happenen its so painful situation:(
You are wondering why chicks sometimes get hernias? Ideally chicks pip and zip at the with perfect timing giving their bodies enough time to absorb their yolk sac. But sometimes chicks hatch faster and pop out of the egg with an exposed yolk sac. Sometimes it just takes time and a safe, secure place for them to absorb the yolk sac. This is generally the reason a newborn chick needs to be put in a cup. It's so the chick can absorb the yolk sac safely.

If a chick steps on the unabsorbed yolk sac...that "can" pull out intestines. The chick is in immediate danger from the shock of their intestines being outside of their body, from the chance of perforating the intestines, from the danger of pulling more intestines out as time goes on, from danger of the intestines drying up/dying and infection from the intestines from being exposed to bacteria.

Sometimes the umbilical opening can have a scab and if it's accidentally flicked or moved, that scab can pull intestines out.

Or sometimes it can be an injury. A mother hen/another hen can pick at a chick and cause injuries to the abdomen. The bowels can spill out of a perforation made to the abdomen.

Is he's okay now? I'm no so well in hatching chickens but u r so brave to handle that ..much love to u :hugs

Hoping good thoughts for your chick this morning. :fl

I woke up and couldn't get back to sleep. I was thinking about your chick...lol.

How's the chick? :pop
Hello Everybody! Thank you fro all the encouragement! Chick is still alive and energetically noisy. The herniated tissue did stay in for the most part, but a small amount did come out and has dried up. Chick will not lay down to sleep, and is constantly standing. He is also not drying out because of the previous triple antibiotic cream being slathered in the cup he was in which coated his feathers. He is in the incubator with two other chicks to prevent chilling. Here is a picture of his bottom right now.
