I've started sort of "sketching" (with words) basic little stories, trying out different points of view, and practicing things I'm not great with (dialogue, dragging on too much, etc). I've written some short stories for school projects and got a lot of encouragement, so that's all been helping a lot. I've also been checking out some contests, but have yet to summon the courage to actually enter one.
I'll have to keep that in mind, so far I've just been struggling to find a good community interested in reading, haha.
Abrondon't dream about writing short stories & illustrating them - DO IT!!
Some people on here self published, took them into book stores etc. Gave copies to schools etc. INterest was generated and they were on their way. Doesn't have to be about chickens, or kids stories. Get it down and see what happens. Alot of places have short story contests etc.
You could even post your story or excerpts on BYC (start your own thread) and see what feedback you get. I have a feeling you have talent galore. I used to write for dog magazines (not very glamorous) in high school. I know I'd love to see your stories.
