Hi welcome :jumpy I'm new to BYC also! Do you have a coop yet?
Yes I have a starter coop with an attached run. But I'm thinking i will probably need an upgrade sooner rather than later...

MUCH sooner. That coop and that run are not large enough for 5 chickens.
Yes i was planning to get 3 but you all know how that works out when faced with all those fuzzy little butts lol... I plan on letting them free range most of the day but that coop definitely is way smaller than I thought. It was advertised for 4 large chickens or 6 bantams but I think even that was a stretch

but I think even that was a stretch

It always is! :hmm The marketers of those pre-fabs are taking advantage of folks like you who have no experience and don't know differently... yet.

Lots of folks talk about free ranging to make up for the lack of space their coop/run provides but the problem with that comes when the birds start jumping fence lines and taking off. They will. Or when the little darlings start digging up your flower beds and pooping all over the steps, deck, porch, car... fill in the blank. You get the picture. Or when you get your first predator attack and need to confine the birds for a week or two. Then behavioral issues start because the birds are cramped and bored.

Visit the coop pages for lots of ideas on building a coop from scratch using anything from standard lumber to free pallets or converting a shed or part of a shed into your coop and building a run onto it.
Good luck!

I'm thinking of finding a shed at home depot or something as a starting point then I can modify to it with the nesting boxes and some storage for feed and stuff. I'm thinking I have a few weeks as it's still cold where I am and don't plan on moving g them outside till at least the middle of april.

I have these grand dreams of my perfectly behaved little ladies just gently grazing through the yard and it being so peaceful and easy but I'm getting the sinking feeling I'm way off lol.
