We had a new recipe I tried out of the food section in the paper tonight. It was awful. "Mamaws country steak"..(in the crockpot)...I thought it sounded good, but definitely lacking something. The other night though we had grilled steak salad. yumyum!

my oldest daughter said grace tonight and remembered both families struggling. your mom is right. i kept being thankful for every little thing. even dumb stuff. amazing how it kept me focused.

hugs all around and here's to expecting good meals to be provided so that you can post them all!

when i was growing up, my mom was a drunk druggie,, i remember going through garbage cans for a scrap to eat,, i remember weeks with no food,, and i remember a old mexican lady in chicabee mas that would put food out for us, cause even at 8 years old i was to proud to take handouts.
my kids will NEVER go through that, and i wish my younger brother didnt have to,,,BUT i am glad (now) that i did,,,it taught me ALOT, and i learn from it every day,,and NOONE that i know of will go without food if im here,,when its time for me to have a big "cull" i used to go to the church with it,, but the people that went there for food did it cause they could,, not HAD to,, so now i just take em to the "bad part of town" find some scragly kids,, and take em to their parents.
we still have times when the fridge is pretty bare,, but i would STILL give it away,,i KNOW i could get food if i had to.

That is why DH and I set aside a few dollars a week to donate to our local food bank. I know it's not much, but no child should go to bed hungry.

I just pray our hard earned dollars are spent wisely and can fill an empty belly.

I'm not sure what it is like in your area. But the families in need here have very little to fall back on. They cannot afford fresh vegetables (which are ridiculously expensive). Most are just going through a rough patch and if you own a home or a vehicle you automatically do not qualify for social assistance. It really stinks. I wish there were programs that helped with costs of heating fuel and morgage for a few months or something, just to help get you back on your feet.

The last thing people in this country and yours should be worrying about is going hungry. Hungry children should NEVER happen in a counrty with so MUCH. And it seems to me that the majority of giving comes from those that have little to give.

Low Cost Dishes:

Sheppards Pie
Sloppy Joes
Chili

Pork chop bake (pork is the cheapest meat you can buy right now in Canada--way cheaper than ground beef)

Grease a baking dish and throw in 1 cup of raw rice. Sprinkle in half a package of onion soup mix (and mushrooms if ya got 'em). Top with chops then sprinkle in the rest of your onion soup mix. Add 3 cups of hot water cover and bake for 45 min. @350. Remove cover and brown for five more min.

I've been trying to be more frugal too. Seems like we are living paycheck to paycheck again

There is an old family recipe I make called hot dog soup

1 pkg of dogs
plenty of water
several carrots
green beans
1 large onion
and enough ketchup to make it tasty

DH loves it and you can make a ton for pennies a serving

tonight we are having spaghetti with ground turkey cause my cholesterol and triglycerides are high
I think tomorrow night will be chocolate chip pancakes
And no desert cause my glucose is up too!

if this economy doesn't straighten out we are going to have to go vegetarian!

Agreed. It is sad that there are children who go without so much that others have plenty of. Recognizing this, our church has made a couple of steps to combat this. We had a weedy plot at the back of the parking lot and a bunch of us got together to grow veggies for the poor. They are donated to a homeless shelter and are available to give away when folks come to the church looking for help.

Another thing we've gotten involved in is Angel Food Ministries, a program that allows folks to purchase $60 - $70 worth of food for $30. There are no qualifications for participating and they do take food stamps. I don't know if they serve Canada or if Canada has something similar. Might be worth a little research.

As for the cost of pork, I agree. Pork chops were $1.49/lb at the grocery store yesterday. That is less expensive than hamburger, although I think hamburger can sometimes be stretched a bit further.

As for inexpensive meals - bean soups are a good one. I have a recipe for a lentil and split pea soup that is really good and REALLY inexpensive. It makes a HUGE pot of soup and costs only a couple dollars to make. If anyone is interested, I'll be glad to post it.

We are a large family and I cook for a minimum of 9 every night......usually around 12 to 14. We have used the Angel Food for 2 years now. I love it because you don't have to be in a "income bracket" or a member of the church that is distributing the food. I order online, print my reciept and pick it up at the designated time!

And wanted to add about the pork......we buy the butt roasts when it is on sale, usually around $1.49 a pound and I grind just like hamburger.........it goes a long way when there isn't anything else.
