Hey Grandpa, What's For Supper?

I think tonight is sesame/ginger pasta with peanut sauce, sliced tomatoes and cucumber, leftover orange and fennel salad. I think I need a veggie sort of night. Maybe I'll make some hibiscus mint iced tea too; I made some for the kids, but theirs is too sweet for me. I love the tartness of hibiscus tea when its so hot.

We're up over 10 100 degree days here in Central Texas. Its going to be a long hot summer.

My best wishes to those who aren't feeling well or have little ones who are sick. :aww

I don't usually cook on Fridays, but since my supplies arrived in the mail in the last few days, I'm going to be making Chicago Dogs! For those of you who live in the Chicagoland area, you know what I'm talking about. Don't have all the proper ingredients, but I'm getting closer as I find new sources. I may just have to learn to make the buns myself, tho, because I can't find them here with poppy seeds.

But then again, it's HOT here today. June is usually quite cool here, but we've broken a 50 year record in the past couple of days. Whew! So, I may just save the dogs for another day and do some sort of take-out.

I tried to start at the beginning ..got 25 pages in and gave up 'til another day ...it's gettin' late around here and I don't have any idea what's for dinner....

Any suggestions for a skilled, but pretty sick, cook ...well stocked kitchen, but no A/C ...and a somewhat finicky DH??

I think the virus and the fever and the overall heat has fried my brains ..not one single idea ....except easy and NO OVEN involved.

Btw... the first 25 pages were a lots of FUN! Some great recipes and menus ..I'm homesick for my Nannie and the farm ...fresh peas and beans, meat we raised and so on.. Wow! Gotta get my DH out of this dern city livin' mode...

What "supplies" Buddies? Sounds interesting!!!

Leftovers here....but....I have jerky-to-be marinating for the dehydrator tomorrow and a bag of apples for the apple butter and some fixins for stewed beef/gravy/rice in the crock pot tomorrow!

hope everyone is feeling better soon

My sinus infection is still going strong, but i'm on an antibiotic, prednasone, and cough syrup with codine , woot!
We are still painting so dinner was quick , a cold tri-colored pasta salad with pepparoni, green and red pepper , purple onions olives, tomatoes and italian dressing. And i had left over pot roast so i simmered it to death in texas BBQ sauce and stuck it in a hamburger bun.
DH loved it , he'll eat anything. He actually loves instant taters but I refuse to have them in the house . YUK!

Thank you, purr... now I'm inspired to boil some water and do a cold pasta salad with some nice shrimp in there...

DH will eat that!

Sinus infections are awful, but sounds like you have all the "good" remedies

Hope you've fully recovered soon!

Wow, seems like there's some nasty bug travelling around - we had it here about a month back - everyone in our office was out at one point or another for at least a week. Hope you all are feeling this good soon

DS birthday is tomorrow - 17 (how can my baby be 17!! I haven't lost the baby weight yet!

) Anyway, a bunch of his friends are over so they had "Macho Nachos" and watermelon and he wanted my "Deliciously Easy" Cake (known to others as a cherry dump cake) on this, the hottest day of the year! Oh well, he gets what he wants for his birthday. DH and I had honey-balsamic salmon and some rice pilaf thingee along with watermelon. Pretty easy meals and everyone is happy.

Take care and be well, everyone!

Chicago Dogs are hot dogs that have been "dragged through the garden" as they like to say it. Officially, a Chicago Dog is a Vienna Beef hot dog in a poppy seed bun, topped with mustard (no ketchup), fresh tomato wedges, a dill pickle spear, diced onions, fluorescent green sweet relish, topped with two "sport peppers" and a dash of celery salt.

The "supplies" that I needed to do it properly were the relish and the sport peppers. I've tried other peppers in the dogs and it just doesn't work. It HAS to be sport peppers.

They were yummy, by the way! Ever since visiting Chicago and tasting one of these yummy treats, a plain ol' dog just doesn't do it anymore.

Here's some info and photos as well as directions for making your own.

Sport peppers are a medium hot pepper, similar to a tabasco pepper, but a bit bigger and usually pickled green. They sell the seeds for them at the Tomato Growers website:
http://www.tomatogrowers.com/hot5.htm

But, if you Google it, you can find several places who sell them in the jars. While most sites mention their use in Chicago Dogs, there were a few references that another name for them is the Mississippi Sport and that Southerners sometimes top their greens with them. Since we have several Southerners on this thread, perhaps they can clarify.
