What determines if a nation is legitimate?

The ability to forcefully break away. We as a nation were able to break away from England. They were unable to enforce their rule upon us. The Confederacy was not able to do so even though they very bravely attempted too.

Sorry guys the South lost. Don't feel so bad. You weren't there, nothing you can do about it. Be proud that they tried.

The South was forced to fire, Lincoln said he was going to maintain all Federal property within the CSA. The Confederates had to fire before Lincoln supplied the fort with fresh troops and supplies. The Confederacy had to attack before they got there because as said by Q9 they would have controlled Charleston, the heart of the Confederacy at that week in time. So, the Confederates took the fort. Lincoln forced them to fire so he could justify going into war... He manipulated the Union into a war, like Polk did...

When Grant used his advantage, being all of his men, it worked. When Burnside did, epic fail... Dang that Burnside, that's the worst general of the Civil War...

Interesting.. Thus, to use your own words,

* The Jews had no right to a nation for over a thousand years, since they were "not able to break away from the countries of the world."
* Nowadays, the people of Tibet have no right to demand freedom from China's oppression, since they are "unable to keep China from enforcing their rule upon them."
* During the few years of his reign before the Third Reich fell, it was perfectly OK for Hitler to do the Holocaust, since the allies were could not stop him, even though "they very bravely attempted too."

For some stupid reason, I'm still too old fashioned to believe that might makes right.

PS: If the above looks like I'm trying to make fun of anyone, or calling someone names, or trying to insult someone, or flaming, I'm not trying to do any such thing. Sorry. It's just that I'm not too good at putting my thoughts into words. Thanks for leaving the thread open thus far, o modly ones.

Very good points, if someone is brave enough to stand up to a larger power for what they believe they deserve respect. Please note there are exceptions...

Since when does what's right count for anything when it comes to politics and power? Might just gets the stronger power what they want.

Actually the US didn't do anything to try and stop the Holocaust. When refugees came by the boatload fleeing Hitlers terror they were turned away by us. They didn't have the ability to stop him, but they could have let the refugees stay.

True, but letting them off was illegal.

That's exactly my point. Might and power will always win. But it DOES NOT MAKE RIGHT. Sure, the Union won the war. But that does NOT mean that the CSA wasn't a legitimate country. It was a fully legitimate country, fighting for it's life against another country who wanted to destroy it.

FYI, that's not a civil war. It's also not a "war between the states." It wasn't even merely a war of northern aggression. It was a war for independence and freedom from the oppressive rule of the Washington bureaucrats who were turning the united STATES into a bungling, oppressive democracy and methodically stamping out the rights of the individual states to rule their citizens as the elected representatives of the people in that state saw fit.
