Hello everyone, my name is April and I am fairly new to chickens! I decided to buy about a dozen chicks back at the end of April or start of May. My chickens are free range and run around the yard all day. We have about 10 acres and they spend most of their time with the horse.

Since getting our chicken we have had a few parish but the remaining 10 chickens are doing great. I have two roosters and 8 laying hens who have been laying like crazy even though I wanted more laying hens! However, 4 days ago we placed some eggs into an incubator that we bought from Tractor Supply and while turning them yesterday ( day 3) we did see 4 eggs starting to develop. However, with all the reading and studying I have done on hatching our own eggs, I am still very nervous yet excited about it! We are trying to get 2 dozen laying chickens so we can supply family and friends with eggs and maybe at times, meat! Anyone ever use the feather plucker from Tractor Supply?

What breeds do you have? As for breeds, to be honest when selecting our chickens we didn't look too much into breeds like we should have done. However, we did get a couple of Leghorns(one rooster), Jersey Giants, 1 Plymouth Rock rooster and some Rhode Islands. They all get along great and from my laying hens I collect lots of eggs and it's winter! I know in the summer it's going to be great!

How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com? I found BackYardChickens.com when I was researching on how to raise my chickens and have used this site many times since deciding to incubate my own eggs. This site has helped me so much I couldn't help but join!

Besides, work, family and chickens, not much else. I do have a few bunnies and hamsters but we are just starting to "live off the farm" live style. Come summer we will be growing our own veggies and we already have some fruit trees going even though we have talked about growing more. We just want to be more self-sufficient and not spend money on things we can grow/catch on our own.

Quick run down on my family, we are currently a family of 5 but soon to be a family of 9. We are adopting my husbands sisters kids and should have them here soon! My husband and I have been together 14 years and married 12 years. We have three beautiful children who are enjoying converting to the lifestyle we are trying to achieve. I am excited to learn more!

Hello:frowApril!
Welcome to BYC!!
So glad to have you here!!
Thanks for sharing your story!!
You have come to the right place.
Hatching is exciting and nerve wrecking all at the same time!!!
Though i have not used the plucker(may ne easier then the old school way) we have 2 big pots(like stew pots for big kitchens) 1 with boiling water and the other with ice cold water, lots of ice. Dunk them neck first in boiling then then the ice and the feathers come right out, for bigger birds you may have to dunk a few times.
There are many people on here that are ready to help in anyway they can!
The learning center also has alot of great information on it as well!
Enjoy!:wee
