After having lurked around here for the last several weeks I decided it might be time to take the leap and join in the fun - so I find myself faced with the dreaded "intro" post.
Not really new to chickens, just new again. I grew up with chickens, they were my pets, my friends, my 4-H project - and so much more (what can I say, we lived miles from town with no one close to my age anywhere nearby). I had quite the varied flock with polish crested, silkies, cochins, barred rock, australorps RIR, and many more of the "heinz 57" variety. Life takes turns and I ended up being on a 20ish year break from chickens and have FINALLY convinced my husband that we, *cough*I*cough*, NEED chickens........so, as of last weekend, we have 16 lovely little ladies in our brooder. Once they are ready to move out they'll be taking up residence in the newly remodeled (in process) feed/tack room of our barn (8x14) and attached 10x20 run with free range of the pasture and yard when we are home to keep an eye on them.
The kids have caught the chicken bug from me, so we had to negotiate our selections and finally settled on - 3 golden laced wyandottes, 3 silver laced wyandottes, 4 light brahmas, 3 EE and 3 buff orpingtons. So far, so good - all bright eyed and bushy tailed. While I'm not new to chickens I realize that a LOT can change in 20 years - so in the last several weeks I've been brushing up on a few things, which is what lead me here.
In non-chicken related news - "we" are myself, my husband, a daughter (17) and son (13) - the other kids are 3 dogs, 6 cats and 2 horses. We've been in Indiana for 10 years now (courtesy of the USMC , though DH has since retired) - by way of NC, OR and my home state of Idaho (which I miss dearly and would return to in a heartbeat - anywhere in the NW, really, but with owning a house here, both of us having our careers and DD getting ready to start college out here it doesn't seem a move is in the cards any time soon).
So, that's me - looking forward to getting to know you all and being a part of BYC!
