(1) Are you new to chickens / when did you first get chickens?
Yes, brand-spankin' nooby-new! I've been thinking about having 3 or 4 chickens in our suburban back yard for about a year now, and I finally convinced my husband it's not a crazy idea! ;-) To my surprise, I found out it's legal in Wichita (no roosters, tho), and even my neighborhood association allows it!
(2) How many chickens do you have right now?
None - zero - zippo - zilch -- hope too remedy that in March, after my daughter's wedding is over.
(3) What breeds do you have?
I'd like to have reasonably good egg producers that are calm and friendly and easy to handle, so they'll be good pets, too. So I'm thinking probably RIR or Plymouth Rock (the barred are so pretty!) or something like that. Recommendations would be welcome!
(4) How did you find out about BackYardChickens.com?
Did a web search on raising chickens!
(5) What are some of your other hobbies?
Crossword & logic puzzles, vegetable gardening, and I'm addicted to CuteOverload.com!
(6) Tell us about your family, your other pets, your occupation, or anything else you'd like to share.
My husband of 35 years and I have kind of a role-reversal-thing going: he cooks dinner every night, and I'm the family handyman. We have three cats and two dogs and three grown children, and I'm not currently working outside of home.
I've read all the FAQs and "Raising Chickens 101" on here, and am delving deeper in the forums. You all seem like SUCH a nice bunch of people, and so helpful! I'm not a person to jump into something unprepared -- in fact, I tend to OVERprepare, and I'm pretty nervous about taking this on. But I've had dogs and cats for years, so I can do this, right?
