I have a neighbor that has a few chickens and she needs help. She has older chickens and I'm afraid she has one that is dying of old age. She told me she has brought the chicken into the house because her other chickens are picking on it. Excuse me, it is a hen. She said it is not pooping and that it is really bloated. She is still eating and drinking water and still looks good in spite of the bloating. What should we do besides keeping it warm.

Well maybe it hasn’t pooped in a bit cause the other chx weren’t letting her feed/water. Maybe on her own with some food water she’ll start pooping again... Not sure i could tell if a chicken was ‘bloated’ or not with all their feathers. If its too hot in the house she’s going to stick her wings out a little and ‘look bigger’ too so that could be it. Hopefully her coop has enough room for the chx in there, i think thats the main cause of chicken brutality, but at the end of the day they are basically just little baby dinasaurs...

Hey, thanks for the prompt reply and good info. I have not seen the chicken and am waiting for her to call me back as she was fixing dinner. And I'm trying to figure this website out.

I think I was to reply here. Thanks Peter for the good common sense advise. She is going to call me back as I called her to tell her about backyard chickens. I have not seen the chicken. I told her to keep her warm and maybe give her some wet food. I think this chicken is about eight years old and I'm afraid it may be dying on her. But at the same time I want to do anything to help both of them.

I am very happy you joined us here at BYC! Alas, I can say the circumstances could be better... I am sorry for what you are dealing with :hit

This site has a BUNCH of useful information, and as Hope hinted at, the ER section would be a great destination for your dilemma.

Have a safe and happy holiday season!:thumbsup
