What about weeds? Are there weeds like wild mustard or dandelions that are toxic to chickens? Mine are going to have little in the way of grass here in San Diego and I am trying to figure out if the common weeds I have will be ok for them to eat and munch in the pen when I cannot let a few out into my garden to help me.
I am guessing dandelions are cause we can eat those. But are they the same kind? The wild mustard has small yellow flowers and nice leaves. We may have a water shortage, but no one has told our weeds that apparently!
Also I just was wondering about radish and carrot tops? What about those?
You know I have to think about all the backyard chickens that my DH's family raised on this farm. His grandma and mama threw whatever was leftover to the chickens and the chickens were fine. Guess they didn't know they were suppose to read some book.

I'm not going to tell you that you have to do things my way, but I will tell you what I know from my own experience.
My chickens free range on 80 acres. They eat what they like and leave the rest alone. Chickens go feral sometimes and manage to survive. They must have a sense about what's okay and what's not.
Chickens do well without our help, that is certain. I'm convinced that most of the time they are just as happy without it. And if you have enough rampant scrubs running around, you wont likekly be short of eggs or the occasional pot stuffer.
However, if we are to derive the maxium benefit they represent to us, we should steward them to the best of our abilities.

I totally agree with this. I don't just turn my chickens loose and not worry about them. They have feed, water and oyster shell available 24/7. They are locked in a predator proof coop every night. I do health checks on my hens daily and on my roo once a week (he's not appreciative of being handled). I take care of them to the best of my ability because they mean alot to me and I have alot of time and money invested in them.
However, I'm not going to freak out when it rains and the pastures are full of mushrooms or they start nipping at some vine growing on the fence, because I've already figured out that my chickens know what's best for them.
