"we should meet at Don cucos/La cabana for margaritas and chat about chickens"

A lurking Acton gal here, can I join you? :)

Hello All,

I'm in Tehachapi and I love it! I'm just getting started with chickens. We have built a great coop and fenced in run to protect the girls. Plus we put chicken wire over the top of the run just incase a bird of prey sees an easy snack. For now the chicks are inside in there brooding box. Such cute little fluff balls! We started with ten and all are doing good except one. She has a dirty butt. I take a warm washcloth and clean her each day. Hopefully she will be ok. She is also the smallest of the group.

I'm glad I found this site. Lots of great information.

I am going back and forth over the 'worming chickens" issue. My small flock is 2 years old, I've never wormed and don't think I have a problem with that. But, egg production is down - yes, probably age related ;-) - so, I'm considering getting a fecal test done to see if there are worms present, rather than just treating. Anyone know of local vets that do this (I am in Acton, but happy to travel). I did ring a couple of local vets, from their response, this is not a normal request LOL.

I'm also curious, anyone else worm their chickens? Am I making something about nothing?

TIA

I haven't yet, but I give them garlic in their feed every day as a preventative. Then again, mine are pretty young so it hasn't been an issue yet anyway!

I've never wormed but I do give mine girls garlic powder, cayenne powder along with vitamines and probio. Mine are a little over 2 years and have slow'd with the egg production also. Just added two new Australorps to our small flock.

I also found this link on Pintrest...not sure if it would help, but worth checkin out. We're located in Acton also.

I bought this at Hemme Hay & feed but Amazon sells it also...Nutri Drench, I swear by this stuff...lost so many of my shipped chicks the first week wish I'd had it then...No losses since I gave them this stuff. Coincidence ...maybe but the BA's were really struggling, so I think it really helped.

I've also have found the Nutri-Drench at Fox Feed both in Santa Clarita and Acton. Which reminds me, there's a fundraiser tomorrow at Vincent Hill Station for the employee killed a few weeks back at Fox Feed in Acton. If anyone would like to attend here's the information attached.
