HOLIDAY HATCH PARTY... chicks anyone... the party continues....

We are nature's pessimists. But I like to think we are setting ourselves up for a pleasant surprise. I think it's better to spend a couple of months waiting for them to crow and get eggs instead than it is to wait for eggs and get the morning wakeup call.

On the Delawares and the chick customer. I've seen pictures of Delawares and had considered them for the size. They are awfully pretty birds, too. Though here, they would be pinkish orange all the time. My poor little white roosters...

There is an add in the local iwanna paper. Some one wants bantam roosters and they have specific requests. I have to wonder...can there be anyone out there who has the opposite problem? Is there some one who hatches too many hens?

My chicks sound like they have settled down for the night. I think I will too in just a little bit. They don't huddle exactly but they sleep in a chick carpet on the bottom of the brooder.

so, i had just gotten one chick out of the cage, and had not closed it yet, and another tried to fly out, and my dog tried to catch him mid air like a treat.. i hollered.. i was right here and he didn't chomp down... but the poor little guy doesn't have complete control of his one side... i'm not sure if he's just sore.. like i fwe took a tumble down the stairs and out muscles hurt to move, or if this will be permanent... he's hobbling over to the food and water on his own... i guess we'll just wait and watch... when he's awake he seem alert, just not up and running like the others... and he doesn't like to be away from them so he's in there letting them trip over him...
i hope he feels better in the am....

Hey all you guys - I haven't been around much this week but just read through all your posts and have enjoyed catching up.

One of my chicks has a splayed leg, it is one of the chicks I helped out of it's shell, it had all kinds of trouble the first several days

I've tried bracing its legs with a band aid like I read about somewhere on this site, and it is getting better but she's only about half the size of the other chicks. They weren't letting her eat so now I feed her separately. Don't know if she's going to make it or not but if she does I sure hope she doesn't turn out to be a roo. I've spent a lot of time with her, I think she's a sweet heart.

I can't believe how fast they are growing. It's amazing! Time to think about building a coop! I'm hoping to find some discarded building scraps so it isn't as expensive, do you all have coops already?

Kathy - How did it go with your Delawares?
