"Holistic" Dog thread!

Any suggestions on deworming dogs?
I last dewormed my dog with a conventional wormer, just because I hadn't found a holistic style one yet. Since then, I did find this holistic deworm on Etsy which I went ahead and bought! It has a lot of great stuff in it, concerned one of my dogs had worms so I gave it to him some. Hoping to see improvement. https://www.etsy.com/listing/681283...allery-1-1&organic_search_click=1&frs=1&sts=1
I'm not entirely sure if it worked yet since I'm not even sure if my dog has worms, so I can't vouch for it.
If you do use a conventional wormer, I just try to boost the immune system afterward. Feed Chlorella to help detox any toxins that may have come with the wormer. Feed probiotics to help with any damage done to the gut, along with a leaky gut supplement, (I use Four Leaf Rover Gut Guard).

Yes, I've heard that DE is good too, never used it though. I do use it for fleas, works wonders!
That stuff is amazing. Safe for animals and humans. The caution with DE is you do not want to overly use it. Lightly coat kibble or whatever you feed your dog with a few spoonfuls of DE, once per day for about a week. If you constantly use it, it will start killing off the good bugs in the guts.

Definitely. Its brutal, but much better than a conventional wormer. I'll have to try that next time! I read it before, but was hesitant to use it. Great idea!

My dogs aren't totally holistic. But, I have made their food in the past. Currently they get a decent kibble and supplements plus beneficial human food.
My dogs are on limited vaccinations because one of them had a major reaction after getting one. They are totally holistic when it comes to flea and tick meds. The same dog almost died after getting a dose of a prescribed well known flea and tick meds (I won't name). She's had different reactions to preventatives in the past, so sorry to say there aren't any out there that are safe for her. Since the major episode, I've done a lot of research and went with a more natural preventative.

With that said, does anyone feed their dog (or pets) a beneficial mushroom supplement? I've got one dog that developed an abscess on the roof of its mouth (an epuli). I'm currently treating with homeopathic remedies. It is shrinking and healing. However, the mushrooom supplement made for dogs that I'm offering has some other ingredients that makes me think the mushroom the dog is getting isn't really quality. I've been researching (it seems like that's all I do 🙂); and, I have found some human supplements that look promising, but just wondering if anyone has some suggestions.

This is very interesting. I've read that dogs can have reactions to flea meds, and have only used DE since then. Seemed to work really well.
Also, just out or curiosity, what supplements do you feed them? I feed a mushroom powder mix, Chlorella, Hemp seed oil (to offset omega 6's in my homemade raw) and dried dandelion greens. I'm always interested to see what other owners feed. I love doing research like that. :D

I do! I feed Four Leaf Rover Immunity. Its an 8 (I think 8, maybe 7) mushroom blend made with freeze dried mushroom power. I use their brand for all of my dogs supplements unless they don't have it. They have really high quality products from what I can tell. Its Organic/all natural. They're also the only source I could find that had soil based probiotics.
Heres a link to the Immunity blend- https://fourleafrover.com/products/...cWrJ6rV2ZDiN1cWSTXIl6cWt4Twim0N4aAtnfEALw_wcB
It has a lot of really good reviews as well.

There is a particular gene that causes dogs to have bad reactions to many common medications. (Ivermectin, commonly used to prevent or treat parasites, is one of the medicines that causes problems for such dogs.)

I found an article that talks about it, including a list of medicines to avoid.

https://todaysveterinarynurse.com/articles/mdr1-genetic-testing-what-you-need-to-know/

And for those who like more reputable sources, here's a study on the subject:
https://www.pnas.org/content/101/32/11725

If that is the problem with your dog, it could be confirmed by a genetic test, and then you would know which medicines are safe to use in future (because it is common enough, and has been studied enough, that many medicines have been checked for whether they are safe or not.)

Of course, if your dog's problem has a different cause, then my post here will be of no use to you. ;)
