home made brooder ? any plans

i did buy a used cage tho one of those wire ones u sually see hamsters or rats it, but i was wondering for brooders should the side be covered?

yes, it would be better if the sides were covered at least partway up, preferably most or all the way up to block drafts.

dont have to be... right now i have about 16 jumbo coturnix quail chicks in one of those rabbit cages

it looks just like this one

You silly rabbit, this place is for chicks..........I would use a large cardboard box (refrigerator size) with high sides with the lamp in the center placed about 20" off the floor....The chicks will tell you if they are cold....by keeping an eye on them.
