Hard to say exactly but looks like an air bubble and a little free blood. Speaking of re-purposing tools, any time my husband gets a thermometer out he says “this hasn’t been in anything’s butt has it?”

So is the most likely cause of death heart defect which lead to cardiac arrest, lung problems, or both?

So far my understanding is that he died of internal problems and I don't have to worry about treating the rest of my birds for something viral, bacterial, parasitical, etc.

You are not going to worry about treating any one or anything right now.
I think this was a freak accident...

Yes, keep a close eye on the other birds but hopefully it was just an unlucky isolated death. It still could be heart related, too. Has it been really hot? I think your necropsy was very tidy and well done by the way

The past 5 days before yesterday have been in the high 80s to high 90s.

I am actually eating and looking at these pics at the same time.
It's bothering me one bit.

I just realized that I'm eating while looking at these pics too! Twice now! Eighteen years ago when my husband and I started dating, if you'd told me that someday I'd do a full day of farm chores and then I'd be eating a bowl of Life cereal while peering with interest at pics of chicken guts, I'd have run screaming!
