Homemade Ice Cream anyone?

I'm SO glad you shared this......I was almost a victim myself. I narrowly escaped with my fat safely stored all over my body. Because of ice cream, I am TWICE the woman I used to be.......and I've got the scales to prove it. Oh why couldn't I have been a plain old alcoholic instead????? At least when I was sober, I'd be thin.

Sorry, halo, I wasn't following the thread! Here is the recipe for peach ice cream from Richard Sax's "Classic Home Desserts." Very simple - no cooking. Uses no eggs, though!

Ice Cream Social Peach Ice Cream

Makes about 1 qt.

3 medium-size fully ripe peaches, peeled, stoned, and chopped (about 1 1/2 cups)
1/4 cup plus 2 T sugar
1 1/2 tsp pure vanilla extract
2 cups (1 pint) half and half, or 1 1/2 cups whole milk plus 1/2 cup heavy cream

1. In a bowl using a potato masher or wooden spoon, break up the peaches with the sugar and vanilla until coarsely mashed. Stir in the half and half or milk and cream. Taste and add more sugar if needed.

2. Pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and freeze according to the manufacturer's directions. (You can also still-freeze this ice cream, though it will not be as smooth. If anyone wants instructions for still-freezing, let me know, and I will type that up, too!)

3. When the ice cream is thickened and frozen, scrape it into a plastic container, cover, and freeze for at least 1 hour. Let the ice cream soften slightly in the refrigerator before serving.

That is hilarious! And I need that recipe book Halo, where can I get one? It has been a long time since I made homemade ice cream but you make me want to again.

No kidding about the tubs getting smaller and then you find a good ice cream and they discontinue it or change the size. Starbucks Java chip.... oh my stars!

Hi, I have the Kitchen Aid ice cream maker. Works great. I keep it in the freezer all the time. When I want to make ice cream its ready to go.

I just got an ice cream maker for my birthday. I got the wooden one that you can either hand crank or use the electric part. Here's the recipe I made, it came out super yummy. If you have a smaller ice cream maker, you may want to 1/2 this recipe. It filled the canister full on mine.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Ice Cream

2 2/3 cups sugar
2 TBS cornstarch
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp vanilla
6 cups milk (used whole)
4 eggs, beaten (from my girls of course!)
2 cups heavy cream
1 1/3 cups half and half
1 1/2 cups chocolate chips
1 cup peanut butter (used the natural peanut butter)

Mix the sugar, cornstarch and salt in a large saucepan. Over medium heat, slowly stir in the milk, stirring constantly. Very slowly, add the beaten eggs and continue to stir. Reduce heat to low and cook until mixture thickens slightly. Slowly stir in peanut butter and whisk until all peanut butter is combined and mixture is smooth. Slowly add vanilla, half and half and heavy cream. Pour into a large glass bowl and refridgerate for 2-4 hours or until mixture has chilled. Pour mixture into ice cream maker. Stir in chocolate chips once ice cream is finished churning and stir evenly.

Perfect timing on this thread. Stopping at the store on the way home to get half/half and cream to mix up a batch. Might try one of these other recipes since we usually just make French Vanilla with fresh vanilla bean added. Brother-in-law coming to stay overnight on Thursday and want to give him a real treat. We have the KitchenAid ice cream attachment and love it. Came across this cool looking ice cream scoop - Anyone have one and if you do - do you like/hate it?

OH OH OH!!!! Starbucks Java Chip is my absolute favorite ice cream of all time!!!! When I lived with a great friend of mine in NJ for a summer, we'd stock the freezer with all the pints we could buy. Imagine opening the freezer, and all there was in there was STarbucks Ice Cream. Oh my, now THATS a memory...and a recipe that Ive got to find.

Thanks for that!!

Jill, that looks great, and easy.

Scott, Ive seen the recipes that call for egg yolks, and cooking them slightly with cream. I will bow to your experience, and look for recipes with that combination of ingredients. Maybe I can make Jill's peach ice cream with a variation of egg yolks.

I think this weekend will be a great weekend to make egg rolls and ice cream.

Life is soooo good.

It was on Amazon when I pulled up the Kitchenaid Ice Cream maker. It was one of the suggestions to buy with the maker.
