HOMESCHOOLERS...any one

Well i'm toying with the idea. My DH was homeschooled. But we have time to decide as DD is only 3 weeks old.

Thank you tobin123 for starting this thread! I am really loving the idea of getting to know other homeschool mom's on BYC. I am a homeschool mom of 9 years and 5 kids my oldest is in college my youngest is in preschool. Life in our house is never boring but we love it! I wouldnt have it any other way. Im looking forward to getting to know all of you!

I do wonder how all of you handle it when you're out in public with your homeschooled children and someone says to them "shouldn't you be in school." or "no school today?" I've tried telling them we homeschool and I get the weirdest looks. It makes me feel uncomfortable and I hope it isn't affecting my son too

I love telling others I homeschool! First is the look of shock

followed by... "I could never to that"

I think its good for others to see homeschoolers out and about, we are learning and growing. Dont let the looks worry you, smile and educate others... its ok if not everyone understands and most likely the "look" is because they are thinking... "I could never do that! Is she crazy?" Well maybe?

But my kids are happy and I have the BEST job EVER!
Dont get me wrong... IM NOT SUPERMOM... sooo far from it... We have our bad days (today was one of them

) But all and all... I wouldnt trade this for anything.

Virginia HSing mom to a 3rd grader here. DD has severe anxiety disorder and cannot function in the chaos of her PS. No reflection on the education there, just not working for her. Two DS's did/do PS successfully.

We use Time4Learning.com and lots of workbooks! Its nice cause she reads at a 7th grade level so we can work at her pace, not a standardized pace.

Hello! I hs my 11 year old son and 7 year old daughter..going on 4 years now. We live in Texas, which IMO is one the BEST states to hs in! all laws fall in line with private school so as long as they are being taught the basics of reading, writing, math and social studies you are good

, of course we do much more than that! We are so blessed to live in a heavily hs populated area there are so many options. We go to a hs co-op once a week and have plenty of time for 4h activities. So glad to see someone start a section on this group!!

I find the toughest question to answer that people ask is "what grade are you in?" my kids never know what to say lol! We take time on things they struggle in so they may be ahead of kids their age in one subject and behind in another...which is ok b/c I intend to hs to graduation. It's always hard at first... there is always that one relative (or maybe more in my case!)

that doesn't agree with it but I have found that most of them come around when they understand it more.

I have been using A Abeka curriculum but I am slowly moving to using alpha-omega switched-on schoolhouse for my son... it is really working out so far so I may switch to it totally. It was getting difficult trying to teach one to read and the other important math and language skills. SOS really lightened the load for me and he loves it since he is doing school on the computer.

i am so glad to see this site.. daughter is going to start homeschooling grandaughter. she is failing fast.. she had an eye injury and is blind in one eye and has a very hard time at school.. she also has severe anxiety attacks like i did and her mother and all the women in this family.. the hard part is choosing a program.. we are looking into the hirsch program right now .. maybe this will be the right one for us.. she only reads at a kindergarten level and is 8. but she excells at math and science.. she is pulled from disablitly teacher to another then back to her main room everyday and she is unable to complete any of the school projects.. when she stands in front of the class to show her work she always has to say i didn't get to finish.. the kids call her a retard. she is like the rest of us.. genius in some areas and lacking in others.. she is the most insecure and sweetest thing.

Boy can I relate to that!!! What really weird is when someone asks me what grade they are in and I cant remember... OOOPS! LOL But its true we are ahead in some areas and behind in others. But then again, so are many ps kids. All of us have our gifts and none of us excell in every subject.

Bless her little heart! My oldest son is severly dyslexic and struggle in ps with a lot of the same issues. Name calling etc... After a long search and many tears we finally found a program that works. We have used so many reading programs and not all were bad they just didnt work for him. If your daughter has any questions I would be happy to help in any way I can. Just pm me. You have adorable grandchildren!!!

I do some homeschooling with my 5yo. He's in kindergarten at a Parent Partnered Program through our local school district, which means he attends some classes in a mixed K-5 class of about 12 - 15 kids, and then we do some stuff at home as well. We're doing more classes at school this year than I ever intended to, because of the (unplanned) arrival of boy #3 last August. The 5yo is a smart but challenging kid, and I really needed him to have some structure and routine this year while I have a new baby and a toddler at home. In the future, we will definitely stay involved with the program, but the amount of time we spend there may fluctuate depending on our circumstances each year.

I love that grade question -- his teacher doesn't even know which kid is in which grade, just which group they're in by ability for each subject. :)

LOL I used to get "You home school? Aren't you a teacher??" I home schooled my son even though I teach in the district he was going to. He chose to go back with his friends and graduate with them, but his home schooling years put him ahead of everyone.

Heh heh, I was homeschooled all the way through highschool (well, a lot of dual credit college courses in the last few years) and loved it. I probably never would have gotten chickens or done any of my other activities (burding, astronomy, flyfishing) had I gone to public school. Stick with it, it's worth it! Just ignore all the naysayers out there.

Some people may say it's hard for homeschoolers to get into college, but I managed to get in to one of the best agricultural universities in the country relatively easy!
