Horrible hatchery experience (Ideal Poultry) is this normal?

I am south of you in NC and got my last Ideal order over night. The 6am call on a SUNDAY from the PO begging me to "come get these things" was a surprise. The PO ain't open, but someone would gladly bring them to me on the loading dock, just ring the bell.

Matt

That's reassuring. They told me the chicks should be shipping on a Wed., so hopefully they'll come on Thursday morning. Maybe they'll come before work, so I don't have to try and explain to my boss why it's so urgent that I leave work to go and get some chickens.

I really hope they don't ship them on the weekend because I'm not even sure there's anyone in my local post office on Sunday. I'm thinking I should probably warn the post office that sometime next week I'll be getting some chicks. Do most of you tell the post office ahead of time, give them contact information, etc.? I know that my post office has gotten chicks before because I was in there getting my mail once when a box of chicks had just been brought up to the front counter (presumably so they could call the recipient to come and pick them up).

I haven't ordered from Ideal, but the first time Cackle tried to ship my birds the PO killed most of them. But, the PO called Cackle and Cackle asked them to be returned to them. I am glad I didn't have to open a box of dead birds. I don't think the PO takes good care of them. I don't know why UPS won't ship chicks. My husband worked for UPS for many years and all kinds of live animals went through his line (turtles, fish, snakes, etc.).

Our PO here freaks out when they get birds. Funny since there are at least four feed stores that get chicks once or twice a week. But, last week the PO in Jackson, TN, called to see if they should hold my birds at the office for the morning truck to my town or ship them on the evening truck. They would have set all night in the heat if they had gone with the evening truck. The lady was nice enough to crawl in a truck and pull my birds off. She even offered to take them home and water/feed them if I wanted her too. I think she was a fellow chicken lover!

Curious where you got this information? Some years back I worked for a USPS contract hauler & schedules were strictly adhered to.
